Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on November 29th, 2012 by Candace – 2 Comments
This is a chubby Christmas tree ornament that comes with a lot of options. You can make it with more or fewer tiers or with no tiers at all. You can alternate shades of green for each tier, add strings of beads, sew on tiny buttons to decorate it, and make it as unique as the tree it will go on.

Why We Swap

Posted in Fun Ramblings on November 28th, 2012 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 8 Comments

I am in a really cool group on Ravelry.com! The name of the group is Lion Brand Swaps. I was attracted to the group because I love Lion Brand yarns and someone invited me to join.

Because it was Lion Brand, and the people were nice, I felt comfortable enough to join and participate in my first craft swap. To make sure it was fair to everyone, we had some requirements about what to send. We each filled out a questionnaire about our likes, dislikes, and wishes. We were each assigned a partner and set off to “stalk” our partners. (We were just looking at their projects and their Ravelry queues to see what they liked! It was not scary stalking!!) We corresponded with our partners, and we also chatted happily on the swap thread.

Crochet Pattern: Buttons for Embellishing

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on November 27th, 2012 by Corinne Munger – 3 Comments
Though not a necessity, embellishments really add another dimension to your work. In today’s styles you’ll see many flowers adorning headbands, bags, cowls, etc., but they’re not always for everyone. How about a change? How about buttons? It understates your piece yet adds a little flair. The following pattern will show you just how ridiculously easy it is to create your own buttons and some suggestions on where to use them.

You will need to learn the Adjustable Double Ring technique for this (don’t worry, it’s easy!). Try them in different colors and sizes and you’ll have a full inventory of a really cute embellishment! Note: These buttons are made to use as an embellishment as they do not hold the “stiff” properties needed to use as a functional button.

There’s a new pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! This is a fun scarf for teens or anyone looking to add a bit of ruffly texture to an outfit. It’s really easy to dress down or dress up with this scarf! Feel free to crochet the scarf in bright bold colors for a fun look or warm colors for a sophisticated look. The scarf is crocheted all in one piece and the ruffles are crocheted as you go. The ruffles are created by crocheting a series of simple chain loops. The pattern is easily adjustable so you can make the scarf as wide or as long as desired!

Let’s Talk About Ravelry!

Posted in Fun Ramblings on November 24th, 2012 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 31 Comments

Crochet Spot is an incredible place to build community. I love coming here to see all of the gorgeous patterns and to let my imagination run wild with how I might use them! I also love interacting with the Crochet Spot fans because I know they’re just like me – Crochet Lovers!!

I wanted to ask the Crochet Spot readers what you think about Ravelry. Ravelry.com is a social network where people can connect through their love of crochet and other fiber crafts. In order to become a member, anyone can sign up for a free login. Ravelry is big (with over 2 million users) and there are many kind users who want to help you make the most of your experience. However, as with any internet forum, use basic caution and common sense! 😀 Over all, my experience on Ravelry has been very positive.

Does anybody here use Ravelry? If so, what do you think? Did you know that there is a Crochet Spot group on Ravelry? If you have a Ravelry account, please share your IDs here so we can connect there as well. I can be found as artlikebread on Ravelry, and I love making new friends there.

If you are not using Ravelry, why not? There is no right or wrong way to enjoy crochet, so I am just curious about what you think!

Let’s Talk Embellishments

Posted in Fun Ramblings on November 17th, 2012 by Corinne Munger – 2 Comments
To embellish an item is to bring attention to it – to give another level of life to it. A plain pair of mittens become a lady’s hand adornment. A plain scarf becomes a “lovely” scarf, and a plain handbag becomes a statement piece – all with embellishments. The choices are endless. You can use flowers, buttons, lace, ribbons, bows, and beads. You can even embellish with jewelry, leather and fabrics – your imagination is your limit.

A small variety of embellishments
