6 Fun Places to Crochet Outside

By Rachel Choi – 12 Comments
Now that the weather is getting warmer, I’m sure you want to spend more time outside rather than being cooped up in your house. Crocheting is known way too much for being the hobby that’s done on your couch in front of the TV, but it doesn’t have to be. Why not take your crochet with you wherever you go? Carry it along in a convenient bag or container and find an enjoyable place to crochet outside. Here are ideas of places to go to crochet and enjoy the beautiful nature of the outdoors. crochet outside

  1. Park – Find a bench in a park and crochet away! You can even bring the kids, so they can play while you crochet. If you’re worried about getting your yarn dirty, just put it in a bag or use a yarn container. Check out this post to see how you can make your own: Yarn Containers
  2. Picnic – Go to a nice place, and lay out a blanket. Eat great food with family and friends, and have a great time! Then whip out the crochet hook and yarn to relax. You can even invite other crochet friends to join you so that you aren’t the only one crocheting.
  3. Porch / Yard – You don’t have to go anywhere special to enjoy the great weather! Just go outside and sit on the porch or a under a tree in your backyard. It’s really enjoyable to sit outside on a nice day, listen to the birds chirp, and crochet.
  4. Beach – If it’s family vacation time, there’s no need to leave the crochet hook and yarn behind. In fact, with so much free time, this can be the best chance to get your projects done. You can still build sand castles and hop in the water. But when you’re ready to wind down, crocheting on the beach can be super fun!
  5. Bus Stop – There’s no better place to crochet then when you’re trying to pass the time. It’s pretty boring waiting at the bus stop. Grab your crochet project and do a few rows while you wait.
  6. Work Break – You can always find a chance to take time out of the day to crochet a bit. How about during your lunch break? You don’t have to go far, just outside of your office building or work area. Find a bench or toss a blanket on the grass to enjoy the great outdoors while having lunch and crochet.

I love to cruise, and I love to crochet, so when the two come together, I am in Heaven. I always bring a crochet project along with me when I set sail. This past January, my yarn traveled to Acapulco, Ixtapa and Manzanillo. While sailing, I frequently grab a deck chair and settle in for a day of sipping drinks, listening to music and crocheting. I have had many wonderful conversations with other passengers who stop to ask what I am working on.
Disney World is also a very favorite place of mine, and it is very common for me to have a ball of yarn and hook in my backpack when I enter the park. I have gotten some funny looks from security at the entrance when they check my bag. I always look forward to spending some time in the wonderful Animal Kingdom with my work. I find a nice spot near a beautiful animal and crochet the day away. I have created many of what I call “my Disney blankets.”

I started a project in Sept. 2009 while on a camping trip. It was a great way to pass the time during the day, and I could also crochet at night by the light of our lantern. It was a very nice part of my vacation, and I got A LOT of crocheting done. I just had to really make sure I had a good place to keep the yarn at so it wouldn’t fall in the dirt. By the way, the project was a christmas tree skirt, and I was able to finish it by Christmas because I got such a good start during that trip. : )

I’ve gotten into the habit of bringing a scarf or hat with me to work and crocheting during lunch or if there is down time–that’s a big ‘if’!

There is a group of us at my work who make hats and scarves for the patients at the local psychiatric hospital for Christmas. The hats and scarves are great projects on the go!

I take my crochet everywhere but I’ve only been crocheting since the Fall. So, I haven’t had much chance to crochet outside until now. I sat on my back porch yesterday after having a cook out with my family. We sat and talked while I crocheted. It was very nice. Also, I plan to crochet while I volunteer at a local historic park this summer. I sit in the buildings or outside and wait for people to come in and ask questions. I’ll have my crochet with me there.

When I have free time in the Summer, I spend it sitting in the sun with a book and a crochet project. That’s my idea of a perfect day!

Books on CD are an excellent way to read and crochet at the same time. I like to go and sit in the shade and crochet while “reading”. Most public Libraries have the books available on CD or some even have them available for download with a time limit. Happy Summer Crocheting!

I have been crocheting on my travels regularly for more than 35 years. I used to commute to a city which was 2 hours away, by train and I would start a small project, like a baby cardigan or booties and bonnet or even a scarf. I once started a baby afghan and the end of my journey back home I had finished more than half of it. It was great. Seeing me crochet a lot of daily commuters too took inspiration and learned hoe to crochet. They still remember the days when all of us would be busy crocheting as the train chugged along to our destination. I also crochet in informal meeting till the meeting starts. Another favourite place is my ladies club where we meet once a month and discuss various issuse and decide on programmes for the month ahead. On the beach when we go to view the sunset and just sit on the beach each evening. waiting for my turn at the clinic. In fact I am never without my hooks and some yarn where ever I may be.

Doctor’s waiting room was one place I managed to crochet, but I think perhaps the oddest, although not outdoors, was in a Cathedral in Scotland during a concert. The crochet was a Christmas present and I just had to get it done. No one seemed to mind 🙂

I love to crochet while commuting to work on the bus. I can get a lot of rows done on that 45 minute drive. I also crochet at my boy’s basketball practices. Having 4 boys that play provides lots of time to crochet a project. Many of the other places that others have already mentioned, in the doctor’s offices, waiting for meetings to start, etc. I always have some type of project with me.

I have a 1 year old baby boy, he doesn’t usually give me much time to crochet. Most of my projects get done while he’s sleeping. I’ve gotten into the habit of carrying little crochet projects everywhere and try to get in a few rows during car rides and visits to family – chatting and crochet make an awesome combinatiion :).
