Crochet Pattern: Beginner’s Butterfly
By Erin Burger – 20 CommentsThese beginner’s butterflies would be great used as an applique on pretty much anything! Blankets, scarfs, beanies, you name it and you could stick one of these simple butterflies on it. The butterfly is made all in one round, so it’s super fast to crochet!

Cute!!!! I’m working on a baby blanket that I wasn’t just super-in-love with. Kinda bland and blah … no more!!! 🙂
aaw so cute…I haven’t really been crocheting a lot I have so many unfinished projects and work in progress’s just can’t seem to finish 🙁 saddens me.
How adorable! Thank you, Rachel!
What yarn did you use for the middle one? Pretty!
Love these sweet butterflies! I’ll be attaching these to barrettes for a baby I know. Thanks so much for the pattern!
so cute. Would be cute to do for hair ornaments. Happy Spring!
I did not get this at all. Mine did not look anything like the picture, just a mess. Where is this stitch “sc in next st from hook” when you are crocheting everything into the ring? Do you have a video turtorial?
these are super sweet i made some to go on my granddaughters beret slouch beanie
on mine for some reason the antanae cross over naturally which is sort of funny and still looks alright i didnt sew them right up on the body leaving the anatanae
can i bore everyone and post some pictures of her beret with the butterflies ?

I must be doing something wrong. Easy to make the ‘two’ but when I put together it looks like one is right-side is wrong-side. Want to get this right because they are so adorable and seemingly quick to make so please help. Thank-you. 🙂
The butterfly pattern is not correct, no matter what you do, there are never 2 right sides facing up, it is always a wrong side and a right side… I used it anyway, because I loved it and needed it… but it needs to be corrected.
Jean,
I don’t have a video tutorial for this, but it’s not sc into the ring, it’s sc into the stitch right after the ring. When it’s the side of a stitch or working in a non conventional manner up the side or opposite side of a piece, the abbreviation for stitch is used. Just feel your way along and place the next sc after the sc into the ring into the next available ‘stitch’.
Thanks!
Erin
Abigail and Barbara,
You are both right there are never two right sides facing up, but I didn’t include that in the pattern because I thought when constructing the butterfly it would be easy to see that one side faced ‘up’ and one faced ‘down’. I am more of a creative crocheter so sometimes the particulars of a pattern aren’t that important to me.
So if you take your two wings line them up so that they look like wings and stitch them up, you’ll be golden!
Thanks,
Erin
Thank you sooo much for this. I’m a very enthusiastic beginner crocheter and this pattern is adorable. I found it a little confusing at first but then used a bit of common sense and creativity and then bingo! My granddaughter now has the sweetest hair clips!
Thank you Erin, I absolutely love it.
I have tried many butterfly patterns before, but this is by far the easiest one out there! Mine turned out to be really cute:)
Thanks
i love this pattern! easy, quick and fun! i would like to make a bigger version of this one, anyone know how to go about that or if it is possible? can i just up the number of stitches worked to make it larger? any advice would be great! thanks in advance,
jules
So cute. I can crochet, but can’t read the abbreviations of patterns. Bummer.
Give it a shot Ann! If you get stuck on a part, just let us know and we’ll try and help and explain it to you. There’s a link to an abbreviation chart in the pattern, so you can start there if you’d like.
Left side/Right side problem 🙂
Since I’m not ambidextrious (sp?) I decided to follow the pattern backwards! With a couple of minor adjustments it worked! I did the 5 stitches for the antennae, then an extra 5 (these are the ones that worked into the trebles for now they are separate). Then the 4 stitches that form the circle, and sl st. Working to the left of my antennae work the pattern backwards (doubles then trebles). Leave a long tail. As you whip stitch the 2 sides together, you include the loose antennae!
Terrible pattern, needs to be corrected.
