Crocheting Something Just for You?

You’ve made those scarf and hat sets, everybody you know has one. I mean the postal worker looked cold didn’t he? The plethora of baby blankets, bonnets and booties for friends and family. Many afghans for gifts and your own home. Toys for little ones and phone cases for older ones. Aunt Mary, your best friend, partner and child all have an item of clothing. Those headbands and scarves went over really well at work and you made a few extra dollars. The snowflakes and decorations went over a treat at Christmas.

But what do you have? Hmmmmm? You have the afghan on the couch, the tissue box cover in the bathroom and the dishcloths in the kitchen. Where is YOUR top, your skirt or dress? So many people I know just keep doing for others. Don’t get me wrong that is fantastic. Keep it up, but why should we be naked?

You are not on your own. I have not made anything for myself since I was a teen, pre hubby and children. For Christmas 2009, yes 2009, I purchased some nice wool and a lovely pattern, wrapped it all up and put it under the tree. I had a few weeks for holiday and could have gotten it all made. It is sitting next to me, in the office mocking my inability to make it for myself, 27 months it has been staring at me. I have really pathetic excuses, my current one is that I am trying to lose weight so I need to wait so I can make it the right size. That’s silly as it will fit, I mean I am not going to halve in size, I’d be dead. Plus I like food to much.

How about you? Have you managed to treat yourself?

Actually, for me it’s the opposite. I make FAR too many things for myself, and only a couple things for others. I should make more things for other people!

Last year I made myself a lovely filet flower top and I am making a blanket now. It’s important to treat yourself to something nice every now and then. I am taking a break from making things for other people. Love yourself and good luck with the diet.

Oh, Fatima, I’d love to see a picture of your flower fillet top! I love making me a few shirts/shrugs every once and a while and I’m always on the look out for new patterns and pictures!

I’ve been making heaps of things for other people lately, mostly for their birthdays. I have a lot of ideas of what I could make for my own home, but it always seems to go to the bottom of the priority list!

… although I did make this pretty headband for myself last week, it didn’t take long! http://www.flushedwithrosycolour.com/2012/03/dainty-pink-flower-headband.html

I made myself a shrug (currently making another this time in black – the other is in grey) and have been wearing it non-stop since I finished it. I had to design it myself since I couldn’t find a pattern for that weight wool.

I am also (actively) working on a cushion cover for a Great Aunt and I am switching back and forth between the two, I have other projects on the go, either started or planned out but I’m not interested in them at the moment.

I am constantly making things to give to others, sometimes taking orders, or making little things to pocket away for a special present for someone. I have learned to crochet for myself though and it is very nice to splurge every once and a while for myself! Yes, the job seems to take longer but it is definitely worth the effort! I just finished a light shrug for summer and I wore it for the first time today I was so excited! Haha, it really is the small things in life that make you smile!

A scarf. I have a scarf made for myself. Because I had to try a new wool and I stitched some more rows… (sorry for my bad english)

your English is just fine… perfectly understandable and clear… not to worry and make yourself something else! maybe mittens or wrist warmers to go with the scarf! have a great day!

I made a holiday shrug for myself with red glitter bulky yarn, and I’m working on a wrap for this spring in turquoise. I can’t crochet as much as I used to, so I’m sewing more; but once in a while I’ll find a pattern using large hooks and give it a try.

Wow. Treat myself? What a novel concept! Lol Hmmm. Maybe I should, thanks for the suggestion! 🙂

The only time I have made anything for myself is when I am doing challenges from one of the crochet groups on Ravelry. That is about the only time, otherwise I am making things for anyone who wants one or when I find a pattern that is perfect for someone else. Also when I am testing out patterns for the first time, it will usually end for me unless I was really proud of it and knew it was perfect for someone else.

truly! treat myself? why, when i get so much enjoyment out of making for others! but i DID find a pattern for some socks with a pattern in them….. hummm. and i DO love socks! and like Asprin says, i tend to work on more than one project at a time, especially labor intensive ones – i get headaches from intricaate instructions.. so i rest doing some easy…thanks for such a nice page.

Do all the dolls and doll clothing I design and keep for myself count? Oh, and all the crazy beanies I’ve been working on…I don’t so so well with real people clothing that’s supposed to fit…

I have taken a break from stuff for me to make a few items for a fundraiser auction. This may be the one and only time I ever decide to make anything with Plarn…but I just finished up a tote bag from it and have been making more for a second one. And then I have a baby doll set to make up for another item.

Doll clothes and beanies certainly count! And I know what you mean. I’m not very good when it comes to clothes either. Too many measurements….
