At first it seemed like we would never run out of our favorite summer treat, but alas they are dwindling. We’ve even taken several to our state fair to be displayed along with the rest of our garden’s bounty. It is so hard to believe that we are approaching the end of August. Before we know it the cool winds of autumn will be blowing. Remember summer by crocheting this easy watermelon potholder. This project makes a great gift! |  |

Materials: Red Worsted Weight Yarn (approximately 30 yards) Green Worsted Weight Yarn (approximately 8 yards) Black Worsted Weight Yarn (approximately 2 yards) Crochet Hook H (5 mm) Yarn Needle Scissors |

Gauge:
3 sc stitches = 1/2 inch
2 sc rows = 1/2 inch

Crochet Pattern: Watermelon Potholder
Make 2
Round 1: with red, ch 4, sl st in first ch made to form a ring, ch 1, working in back loops only now and throughout, 2 sc in each ch around: 8 sc
Round 2-3: ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, sl st in top of beginning ch-1
Round 4: sc in each sc around, sl st in top of beginning ch-1: 32 sc
Round 5: ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, sl st in top of beginning ch-1: 64 sc
Round 6: sc in each sc around, sl st in top of beginning ch-1: 64 sc
Finish off.
Round 7-8: with green, sl st to join, ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st in top of beginning ch-1: 64 sc
Finish off.
Assembly
Using a yarn needle and black yarn stitch on “seeds” on both watermelon pieces. Then, with green yarn, whip stitch the two pieces together, wrong sides facing.

Bonnie, you can use the print function in your internet browser. For most browsers there’s a menu bar at the top, where you can click on “File” and then click “Print”. Each page on Crochet Spot is coded to be printer friendly so it’ll print out neatly.
Love the pattern…this would be neat done in the various colors watermelon comes in…I am thinking of Orange Glow. ;0)

Hi!
I have a question about the part where I do a slip stitch and ch 1 to start a new round (ex. end of Round 4, beginning of Round 5). I’m used to doing continuous rounds and the first sc for each round is usually above the first sc of the previous round. For this pattern, I notice that the beginning of each new round does not align with the beginning of the previous row. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
