Simple Stitches with Many Possibilities
By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 5 CommentsI marvel at all that is possible in crochet. I believe I’ve finally found a craft where nothing is impossible. One thing that is entirely fascinating about crochet is all of the cool patterns you can complete with just basic stitches. Even if you stitched only chains and single crochets, you’d still be able to make a great deal of useful and fashionable items, like place mats, bowls, hats, scarves, cowls, handbags, slippers, and more.
Even experimenting with changing just hook size will completely alter the density, drape, and look of the resulting fabric. If you use a very large hook with a thin yarn, you could still have a beautifully draped fabric, using just the aforementioned stitches. Or, depending upon how you put the stitches together, even a small hook with thin yarn could make a slinky or netted fabric.
It is comforting to think that you don’t have to know everything about crochet in order to have such a satisfying hobby with so many possibilities. Which projects with simple stitches do you admire? Have you ever completed a project requiring the knowledge of just a few stitches?
Great post and a wonderful read!
I love crocheting and being able to take the most simplest stitches and creating a masterpiece! This year I made my mother some adorable pot holders and was amazed how they turned out with just sc’s and changing colors!
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas, Cami, and a Happy New Year!
Lane, Thanks ever so much. Your pot holders sound really cool. Do you have a link to a digital picture so we can see? Best of holidays to you, too! You bring up a great point- color work is a very cool way to spice up simple stitches. 🙂
Caissa, I’m so sorry I didn’t see this post earlier!!!

I have knitted ever since I was 7 (approximately) when my gma taught me. I loved it! It was so fun and I could make a few things–hats, scarves, blankets, etc, and I loved making stuff for people. But last year I had some strange idea to learn how to crochet. I have always been pretty scared of it. It seemed so strange to have no stitches on my needle/hook. I mean, HOW ON EARTH were you supposed to know what stitch to go to next? Well, I just decided ‘hey, why not?’ after I bought a really fun homemade hat with fox ears that was crocheted (I really wished I could replicate it), and looked on YouTube, online articles, websites that featured it, magazines–basically everything and everywhere. Well, my first project (just a straight thin wannabe scarf thing…basically something just to try out this craft), well it was completely terrible. It ended up looking like a mermaid tail. (Kinda cool looking if that was what I was going for… it wasn’t). But then I looked it up more, learned a few basic stitches (after I learned where to place my hook for the stitches), and I was off! I was so much more fun that knitting. There were more stitches and they weren’t bad. Double crochet, single crochet, half-doubt crochet–they weren’t all that different from each other, and things in knitting that were daunting were now easy (hats and mittens), and travel was easier. Gosh, if I dropped a stitch, I would be lost trying to find it! lol But ya, I am a convert to crochet. Even easy stitches can make something beautiful. And while knitting is okay, you have to learn a few more stitches to make something a lot cooler. 🙂 I am still in my basics stage of crochet, but I don’t feel like I am lesser because even with my small amount of knowledge, I can still make amazing stuff! Anywho, long story short- I am so happy with crochet and I appreciate you making this site for us!
Whitney, it is fun to see how our skills can grow when we just have the courage to try something! 🙂 Lane, that project is really nice!
