Crocheting in the Car
By Rachel Choi – 42 CommentsToday I ran some errands and decided that I would take one of my crochet projects with me to work on in the car. Of course I wasn’t the one driving or else I probably wouldn’t be here type. I’ve never crocheted much in the car until now and realized it was sort of hard to get my hook into the loops when my seat is bumping up and down! I guess it takes a little getting used to. |
Also I get sort of nauseous, like motion sick or something. Call me a wimp but it’s true! I remember when I used to read my school books on the bus the same thing would happen. It’s so weird. But at least the feeling went away and I know it’s another thing that I’ll just get used to.
Okay, back to talking about crocheting in the car…I find it a good use of my time, instead of just staring out the window.
Do you do it often?
All the time! But usually on fairly straight stretches of road, and only when I’m a passenger LOL. What a good use of down time!
O so that’s the trick to wait for a straight road or maybe traffic when nothing is moving 🙂
Yep, crochet in the call all of the time! It is a fantastic way to pass time on long trips.
My DH used to say “You’re bringing that!” Now it’s “Why don’t you bring your stuff?” I don’t backseat drive so much, and that “other brake pedal” doesn’t get used quite so much. And for those of you that don’t like to fly, a little yarn and, plastic only, hook makes the ordeal much easier. Completed a beautiful Chemo Cap between So CAL and Vancouver last year. No questions going through security. Metal hooks will be taken, however.
I always wondered what kind of hooks I could bring through the airport. Now I know, thanks Martha!
I can’t do anything as a passenger in a car except zone out or sleep without getting car sick. Anything that requires any concentration does it. lol Reading, watching movies, playing video games. It sucks. Straight roads and steady speeds help a little. I’m not even going to try crocheting. I know it’s almost like breathing and not really concentrating, but if I have to count stitches, I’ll be in trouble.
Good to know I’m not the only one that gets car sick!!! But I guess my sickness isn’t as bad as yours Denise.
when I am a passenger in a car I cannot do anything, If i try to read even a map, or do any reading at all I become violently sick, to avoid car sickness I either sleep or drive. i do not have any choice. Now, put me behind the wheel and it is another matter, another story.
Love your site!! And I read your blurp on the Crochet Shop – I’d be happy to be a tester for you….

Hi Estela!
You’re right, with translation tools on the internet these days you can leave your comment in just about any language, lol!
Hi Rachel!
Como dice Melissa: I love your site.
Yo estoy crocheteando siempre! Cuando viaje en bus, en car, en la sala de espera del dentista!!!!
Siempre, siempre el hilo y la aguja de crochet van conmigo!
If I am a passenger in the car, which I am usually not, I will crochet or knit. I bring my crocheting with me everywhere. This is how obsessed I am I crochet at the stop lights. LOL
Add me to the list of people who can’t do anything in the car except sit there! I can’t even look at a map without first getting a headache which turns into a major carsick incident. I’ve always envied people who could read, sew or crochet in the car. I can only do it when we are stopped for a gas fillup. We are driving to PA to visit family at the end of this month from here in FL and just think of all the crocheting I could get done. Instead I’ll probably sleep. 🙂
I have a 4 1/2 drive from Mass to New Jersey on Thursday but I’m the one driving. I wish I were a passenger so I could get some crocheting done. The only time I got to crochet in the car was last October on a trip to Nashua, NH when my friend drove part of the way. I’m always trying to find time to crochet, especially now when I’m making amigurumi to sell at anime conventions (hence all the driving to New Jersey and such) so I multi-task and crochet whenever I’m doing something that doesn’t require constant use of my hands. And of course while I’m just sitting around watching TV is the perfect time to get stuff done
I don’t drive so I am always crocheting in the car. Our family goes on long trips all the time so I always have a ufo handy to finish up. In October we’re going from Delaware to Cape Cod which is a 6-7 hour drive. It’s a good thing we have a suv to hold all the luggage and my yarn!
I crochet on every car ride over 15 minutes long. I am one of the lucky ones that can. Reading, games, video and crochet, never a problem for me..(except when I was pregnant then I couldn’t, so I do understand how terrible it is)..I get a LOT done, and in the winter, my crocheting keeps me warm before the heater kicks in, or when my husband is too HOT and I am still cold. My daughter is like you Rachel and like the others who can’t even look down or have their eyes focus on something other than out the window. It seems that keeping your head straight ahead is the only way not to feel sick. I’m sorry for you all and I’ve been there, but I’m glad it was just temporary. Crocheting on a long trip makes me not ask “Are we there yet?”.
I crochet in th car all the time (when I’m not driving). I take my crocheting everywhere with me. I have a couple of doctors who are NEVER on time, so my crocheting makes that waiting time go much faster. I crochet for the charity, Angels for Hope. The angels we make are small and take only a short time to crohet so they are perfect for taking along for the ride or wait.
i crochet in the car all the time ,on long trips when some one else is driving,or by myself(not while moving ,not that good yet) ,redlights ,stuck in traffic or on lunch at work.but i dont think there are many places i have not tried to crochet always something fun to make .
I get alot done on long trips,it helps me not watch the road since I’m a nervous passenger
I also crochet in the car when my husband drives to and from camp and when we go visiting. I usually always have a project with me. I just love the little car. Was wondering if you were going to post the pattern for it. I think I could adapt it to a small yellow school bus. I drive one for special needs children. Some of the children are preschoolers and love the bus. It would be really nice to be able to crochet one as a gift for these children. It is very hard to find toy ones of the small bus. Usually you can only find the big bus ones.
I really like you site and think you are adorable.
It’s so much fun reading about everyone’s experience!!! Thanks everyone for sharing.
As for the pattern of the car in the pic, it isn’t mine so I don’t have a pattern for it nor was I able to find that pattern that goes with it. But if I do I will be happy to share 🙂
Ohhh Rachel if only I weren’t the designated driver all the time in our family…
I was fortunate enough to go away for a few days the other week & NOT be driver & I took my crochet & I was amazed at how much I got done…
I can’t read while being a passenger so was suprised I could crochet but when it makes you sick I think that is a sure sign to enjoy the view… you never know you might be inspired by something you see out in the big wide world… B
BTW I’m told bamboo hooks are OK to fly with too + the very little round nose plastic scissors are acceptable as well… Now to stop buying yarn so I can afford a flight ticket… lol
I almost always have something to crochet in the car! I only take small easy projects, such as spiral scrubbies, or wash cloths or granny squares–something I can crochet without thinking! Larger projects tend to get dirty on the floor, and are often too warm!
I crochet all the time in the car, we take a few long trips a year and I love crocheting and sometimes cross stitching. I have to be careful when cross stitching or it can be hazardous to your fingers….LOL
I used to crochet in the car, but now I’m the only one who seems to do any driving so crocheting while in the car is not a great idea, especially since I drive standard lol
Do you have a pattern for this cute little car?
The car isn’t my pattern and I wasn’t able to find the pattern that goes with the picture. But if I do find it, I’ll be happy to let you know where it is 🙂
I also can’t crochet while I’m riding. I get really bad car sick when I try to do suff like that 🙁 I used to crochet some small things when I was in school ^.^
Well I’m always the driver so no I don’t crochet in the car. Although I do if I’m waiting in the car at a doctor’s office or something. I don’t get car sick at all but my mom does. She can’t even look at something for just a minute before she gets naseous (is that how its spelled?)
I have crocheted while driving. Its not that hard.
I don’t crochet while driving but I do take it with me when I know I am going to be in stalled traffic (I live in Pittsburgh) and ESPECIALLY if I am going to the drive-through pharmacy. It helps me pass the time and keeps my temper down during long waits. Sometimes I even have a mental race on how many rows I can finish before “that long light finally turns green” or I make it through a long car line. I usually work on face scrubbies or face/wash/dish cloths in the car.
I blew up the picture of the little car. It seems pretty easy to do. I’ll give it a try, and if I can figure it out, I’ll post the results! I love your site!
Metta
Awesome Metta!
I’d love to know how it goes 🙂
I used to get sick in cars as well, though now I tend to do the driving myself. I had to take the pulic bus coming back from school and I remember I used to get so sick I’d have to come home and go straight to bed. No time for homework, because I’d have a headache that wouldn’t quit. Nothing helped but sleep.
So now because I usually drive, I’ve never brought projects with me to work in the car, though I have started bringing it so I can work in my spare time. I got a pretty good amount done on a project waiting on the doctor today.
I crochet when i can get hubby to drive. We live in australia and to get to our camping spots we usually have a 2-5 hour drive. It drives hubby nuts but who cares, I am relaxed. I also take my corchet with me to appointments to keep me busy when waiting. I
This time usually gets projects finished alot faster.
The only time I crochet in the car is if I’m at my grandparent’s house, I always bring my crochet stuff. I can only crochet in the car for about a half an hour before I start to feel nausious… I can’t do anything in the car except sleep without my stomache hurting…
On long trips I usually take a crochet project. I made a bag on the way home from my grandparents’ house. It was fun.
I don’t know about crocheting in the car but I have been crocheting while travelling around Edinburgh by bus, the only problem is when we are going over cobbles.
Crocheting in the car seems like a total waste of a car ride or a road trip. I love to look out the window and watch the world go by, or look at the scenery, just enjoy the ride. I’ve always loved riding in the car or driving, so I don’t see the need to spend that time doing something else.
I cannot read in the car as a passenger but I can crochet or do cross stitch. Always keep a portable project in the car for making dishcloths or potholders or an easy cowl. It saves me from boredom on long drives to and from the beach or other travels. I even crochet on the beach if I’m tired of reading. You never know when you will get stuck in traffic b/c of an accident or have a wait at the doctor’s office and this way you don’t waste all that precious time when you could be making a gift for someone!
