How to Double Crochet Between Stitches
By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 25 CommentsCrocheting between stitches is an alternative to crocheting through both loops, back loop, or front loop. The resulting stitch is effectively a little shorter than a normal double crochet, and the stitch pattern becomes more open.
To double crochet between stitches, the crochet hook will be inserted in the space between the stitches, as indicated in the picture below.
In order to double crochet between stitches, follow these steps.
1. Yarn over and insert hook between stitches.
2. Pull up loop between stitches.
3. Yarn over and pull through two loops. Notice the open space between stitches on the left.
4. Yarn over again, and pull through remaining two loops. Picture shows completed double crochet between stitches.
This technique of crocheting between stitches can be used for other crochet stitches as well, not just double crochet!

That’s a really good question. I’m wondering that too.
I based this tutorial on a project I did that was worked in the round in spirals, so there was no ending of rows. However, for the sample, I started the first row exactly the same way as a normal double crochet row. To begin the 2nd row, I chained 3 and dc’ed between the next 2 dcs. To end the second row, I double crocheted between the initial ch3 and the first dc of the first row. I know this is kind of wordy, so I’ll make my next tutorial on this topic. I taught myself to crochet ( years ago ) & for a longtime this was how I did all stitches :)….I still use it sometimes can look quite pretty

I learned crocheting when I was in the 5th grade but as I grew older, I never did crochet already. Honestly, I miss doing this. But my knowledge about crocheting is already blurry. This post ignited my interest in crocheting because it kind of gave me a recap about how to crochet.

I would say to start and end the row you would need a sc in the first and last stitches. Because you’re going under the stitch, wouldn’t the double crochet become the height of a single? I haven’t tried it, but if an sc doesn’t work, I’d say try a hdc instead. I hope to try this soon! 🙂
You could certainly try it that way, but that is not how I’ve done it. Thanks for the idea! 🙂
Andrea–just picturing this in my head, but I think the dc between dcs would make it the height of a hdc, since you’re not exactly crocheting UNDER the stitch. I WOULD, however, chain only 2 at the beginning of the row. I’d have to do a swatch to really see how it would affect it. But I really like the looks of this stitch!
This is how I do most of my blankets. Since I am making them for my kids I find it easier to fix the blanket if they pull some of it apart. I start all rows with ch3, it will seem a bit long but you use that extra to finish the next row. I dc across the whole row including the last space (which is the first space from the previous row.) Dc in the last space, then ch 3 to start the same. I finish my blankets with a sc all the way around & they look even on both sides.
