Public Displays of Crochet Planned for WWKIP!
By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 6 CommentsIt’s that time of year. It’s time for crochet to come out of the woodwork and into the streets! As you may already know, we yarn crafters have a special event each year called “World Wide Knit in Public Day,” or WWKIP. Yeah, I know the “K” in there stands for knitting, but I am not going to split hairs about it today. As far as I am concerned, I consider the existence of the phenomenon an invitation to bring yarn to the parks, beaches, and sidewalk cafes! This is our time to be ambassadors of our craft by simply doing what we do.
According to the WWKIP website, the tradition started in 2005 with 25 events all hosted by volunteer coordinators. By 2008, there were 800 events world wide! I first participated in Mexico City in 2009. There were only 3 people at my meeting but we had a lot of fun! In 2012 my Mexican crafting group decided to do a yarnbombing in honor of WWKIP! Here’s a video that shows off our handiwork. As you will see, there is a LOT of crochet!
The dates for this year are June 14-22, 2014 and this time I’d like to take WWKIP to the beach. If you’d like to find a KIP to join, or even volunteer to host a local KIP, there are instructions on the website. You can also register your event there. Let’s make sure that crochet has a strong presence at this great event! The more we can get out there with our happy hooks, the more we can share our love of the craft with the world!
Where is the event located?
Thank You,
They will be in various locations all over the world. You can see about where they are on the WWKIP website!
yes, let’s gatecrash with crochet! heehee
I totally agree with your statement that any excuse will do to take yarn and hook to public places but then, for me, any day is knit (and crochet) in public day! 🙂
Oh yeah! Gatecrashing with hooks in hand. 🙂
awww, I so wish we had something like that in this country with the different cultures and talents. I agree, I look for any excuse to take out my crochet needle and yarn.
Sonia, anyone is welcome to host an event in their country! Just go to the WWKIP website and sign up!
