What’s Your Favorite Color Combos?

By Rachel Choi – 19 Comments

Have you ever started a multi-colored crochet project and realized that your color combo doesn’t look good at all? I certainly have! Even as a crochet designer I sometimes find it hard to choose great color combinations for my projects. Not all of my ideas turn out the way I think they will. Sometimes I create a fabulous color combo and sometimes it’s a flop (hey, I’m only human).

I like to find inspiration wherever I can, from nature while walking my dogs, from my sofa while surfing the web, or from the yarn aisle in the store while holding up different yarns next to one another. I feel as though I use different colors depending on the season. Lots of greens in the spring when the leaves are growing on trees. Oranges, yellows and reds in the fall. Some of my favorites are different shades of blues and turquoise with yellow.

What’s your favorite yarn color combinations and where do you like to get your inspiration from? Leave your comments below to join the conversation!

I love all colours but, I must admit, I’m very partial to blues, reds, pinks and purples. From brights to pastels, it’s all good. I can’t help it 🙂

I tend to use a lot of blues too. Light blue, bright blue, navy blue, all the blues!

I tend to forget about adding a neutral color. A lot of the combos I see from stunning projects include a gray/tan/black/white along with a bright color. I tend to want to go for all the bright colors at once. Right now I’m working on a tote bag with a neutral cream color and also a light pink and a dark pink. Work much better than with 3 bright colors and 2 tones of the same color and be an easy and pleasing choice.

I like color combinations that occur in nature the best. I am drawn to variegated yarns that remind me of nature and I choose yarn colors together that I would see in nature. Whether it would be water, tree leaves, clouds, flower, an animal’s fur, feathers, etc. I do love a lot of blues and greens, and autumn colors.

One thing I have a hard time doing is envisioning a pattern in colors other than the ones in the photo. Like if I really hate the colors they chose for an afghan, it’s hard for me to envision it in colors I would like better. It just looks like an ugly pattern to me. I guess I am very color oriented.

      Nature is a great inspiration!

I also find it hard to visualize some patterns in different colors, but it is amazing when I do see people make them in other colors. I get a “wow” moment when I see how the same pattern can look so different in different colors.

I am drawn to fall -like colors, the most. I live in the Southern part of Virginia, and so when the leaves turn, it is spectacular !
But my fave color combination is this one: off-white,pink, med.bright pink ( “French Rose,”in Red Heart thread) burgundy, ( or Claret) pale green and dark green. I have made a chap stick holder in those colors and I get alot of compliments on it. 🙂
My other fave color combination is pale peach, white and mint green.
Years ago, Red Heart put out a yarn called “Coral Reef,” which has long been discontinued. 🙁 And it was a soft white, pale peach and parakeet ( aka,a bright turquoise) and I loved it !

I tend to also gravitate towards pinks, purples and monochrome colors. But dislike red.I will use burgundy, but sparingly.
I also dislike teal. But my favorite color of all, is mint (pastel) green.

Joann’s has stopped carrying some of my RedHeart favorite yarn. I love this royal blue with a green, tan, and orange strand twined around the blue and a similar ones in main colors of black, brown, red and orange. I use the minor colors to add to the piece. I tend not to use very vibrant colors unless I am crocheting for children or it is a request or I just feel Kooky!

    I guess I’m a nerd!
I ‘studied’ this a bit a few years ago.
there are color wheels on the web that you can mix up the combos you like and then it shows them to you as an afghan with stripes or blocks. it’s interesting to play with adding a super bright color or a few neutrals to make all the colors ‘pop’.

I use nature, too. I made an afghan with the colors of a pansy flower: indigo, purple, off white and bright yellow with a little yellow green. It turned out nice. Can’t go wrong with mother nature!
I also copy other people. http://attic24.typepad.com/ blog and http://www.thepatchworkheart.co.uk/ both have beautiful combos I wouldn’t dream of, but made up they are gorgeous!!

I like using a favorite variegated as a base–then add the colors that are in the variegated. This is becoming increasingly difficult to do, though, because so many colors in the variegated yarns have been discontinued!

When I find a nice bright yarn, I like to pair it with something darker to really make it pop. I’ve done chocolate brown with turqoise, black with violet, and a deep grey with a fuschia/pink. They all turned out really well. I’ll probably end up using similar combinations in the future.

My favorite combo for baby blankets is: pink & white, yellow & white, green & soft yellow with a white border.I just think white, especially soft white goes with many colors.
