Free Crochet Pattern: Newborn Knot Hat
By Rachel Choi – 14 CommentsForget pompoms when you can make a cute, simple knot on top of a hat. This newborn baby hat is great for boys and girls. The hat is crocheted seamlessly in the round from the top down, in one piece. Then the top is knotted and the bottom is cuffed up for the perfect fit. Use the hat for everyday wear or even in a newborn photo shoot.

Not an experienced crochetter – having trouble reading the pattern – starting with round 2 which reads 12: dc in each dc around: 12 dc. Can you explain a bit more. What does 12: mean?
Hi Sandra! It is round 2 to round 12. The instructions are the same for each round from round 2 to round 12, so you will do the same thing for each round.
Hi,
Im pretty new to crocheting. Do I need to chain 2 at the beginning of each round and slip stitch to the chain or to the 1st DC?
Thank you!
Hi Courtney! No need to add any chains, slip stitches, or turns. You will work in the round like a spiral. Here’s a post that explains the different ways to crochet in the round if you need it: https://www.crochetspot.com/different-ways-to-crochet-in-the-round/
Lovely little hat. I was able to make one in the time it took for me to sit through a whole Houston Astros game. Great project for a night sitting at home. Definitely will be making more. Go ‘Stros!!
Thanks for this. Great, easy pattern to follow for a beginner. I added a 2nd colour for the cuff or last two rows in a thicker wool – very happy with the end result.
Hi! I loved this little hat!! Worked up so fast! Quick question … The little guy I made it for turned out to be close to 10 lbs at birth!!! So I was going to try it again but a larger size… maybe closer to a 3\6 month size?? Do you mind giving me some direction On continuing the increase rounds??? Should I do 2DC in first stitch of row 17 then DC in the next 8 stitches continuing that way or should I make larger jump??
Thank you!!,

Hi Jo,
Try replacing round 16 with (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 7 dc) around. That will give you a total of 60 dc. Then continue with round 17 on.
Thank you soo much!! Going to give it a try today while to kiddos are at school!
Good morning,
I understand the spiral to crochet the actual hat but where are the instructions for the tie on the top of the hat please?
Thank you
Gayle
Hi Gayle!
After you are done the hat it will look like the last photo, with the long end on the top of the hat. You’ll tie that long end to create the knot.
Thank you for this pattern, it’s so simple & easy to follow. I made one with alpaca & now she is 4 months & needs a larger one.
This is an amazing pattern. I love it and the hat that comes out of it. Thank you so much!
THANK YOU for all of your hard work…Turned out beautifully.. I just dropped the beginning 12 rows to 8 DC. Turned out goog size for newborn.
