Did you catch the Southwestern Cinch Cowl crochet pattern posted here a few days ago? Well, here’s a hat to go along with it — the Southwestern Beanie!

There is really nothing complicated about this beanie at all. The ribbing for the band is simple single crochets worked in the back loops only, and the body also is single crocheted. And though the striping might look complicated, all it is is beefed up single crochets! Yep, just like the Southwestern Cinch Cowl, the texture is created by working a single crochet puff, which means you just tack on a few more loops when making a regular single crochet.

Top it off with a pom-pom of your color choice and you have a perfect fall accessory! Be sure to check out the first half of this pair, the Southwestern Cinch Cowl!

Skill Level:

Finished Size: Fits Adult size 21” (53cm) – 22” (59cm), with notes on adjusting size

Materials: Medium weight yarn (approximately 20 yards of teal, and 10 yards each of black, red, orange, beige, and brown) Crochet hook G (4.00 mm) and H (5.00 mm) Yarn needle

Gauge:
With H hook,
6 sc = 2’’
8 rows = 2’’
Gauge Swatch: 2’’w x 2’’h (5 cm x 5 cm) ch 7.
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 6 sc
Row 2 – 8: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 6 sc
Finish off.

Special Stitches
Single Crochet Puff Stitch (puff): yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

Color Pattern
Band and Round 1 in Teal
Rounds 2-3 in Black
Rounds 4-5 in Red
Rounds 6-7 in Orange
Rounds 8-9 in Beige
Rounds 10-11 in Brown
Finish with Teal

Adjusting Beanie Size
To change the size of the beanie, crochet fewer or more rows in the band. When you reach the decrease rounds (13 – 21), if you have only added or subtracted a few rows from the band then continue as the pattern suggests. However if you have added or subtracted a larger amount of rows, I would suggest dividing your stitch count by 6 and decreasing 6 times by the quotient number. And don’t worry, it shouldn’t matter too much if the stitch count doesn’t come out even. Just so long as you have decreased 6 times.

Crochet Pattern: Southwestern Beanie
Band
Row 1: with G hook, ch 9, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 8 sc
Row 2 – 68: ch 1, turn, sc in back loops only of each sc across: 8 sc
Sc ends together and turn to work around top of band. Do not finish off.

Body
Round 1: with H hook, ch 1, turn, sc in each row of brim, sl st in first sc: 68 sc
Round 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc around, sl st in first sc: 68 sc
Round 3: ch 1, turn, puff in each sc around, sl st in first st: 68 puffs
Round 4 – 11: repeat Rounds 2 and 3, changing colors every two rows
Round 12: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc around, sl st in first sc: 68 sc
Round 13: ch 1, turn, * sc2tog, sc in next 8 sc, repeat from * around, sc in remaining sc, sl st in first sc: 62 sc
Round 14: repeat Round 12
Round 15: ch 1, turn, * sc2tog, sc in next 7 sc, repeat from * around, sc in remaining sc, sl st in first sc: 56 sc
Round 16: repeat Round 12
Round 17: ch 1, turn, * sc2tog, sc in next 6 sc, repeat from * around, sc in remaining sc, sl st in first sc: 50 sc
Round 18: repeat Round 12
Round 19: ch 1, turn, * sc2tog, sc in next 5 sc, repeat from * around, sc in remaining sc, sl st in first sc: 44 sc
Round 20: repeat Round 12
Round 21: ch 1, turn, * sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, repeat from * around, sc in remaining sc, sl st in first sc: 38 sc
Round 22: repeat Round 12
Finish off.

Use a strand of teal and make a running stitch through Round 22. Pull ends to gather, knot and stitch closed. Make a 3 inch pom-pom of your choice and sew to top of hat.
