Crochet Pattern: Sweetheart Valentine Heart
Special Instructions: dc5tog is like dc2tog, you just pick up 5 dcs instead of 2 (see How to Crochet: Double Crochet Decrease for tutorial)
Round 1: with G hook and DK weight yarn, ch 20, 3 dc in forth ch from hook, dc in next 5 ch, dc5tog, dc in next 5 ch, 7 dc in last ch, working on opposite side of ch, dc in next 7 ch, 5 dc in next ch, dc in next 7 ch, 3 dc in last ch, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 44 dc
Round 2: ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in next 3 dc, dc in next 3 dc, dc5tog, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next 7 dc, dc in next 9 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 9 dc, 2 dc in next 3 dc, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 57 dc
Round 3: ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) 3 times, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next dc, skipping next 3 dc, hdc in next dc, dc in next dc, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) 7 times, dc in next 11 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 11 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) 3 times, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 69 dc , 2 hdc

I have come across many heart designs after 2 years of crocheting, but this is probably the prettiest! (Is that a word-?)

I made one that was pink with a red border. It is pretty, but somehow it was not symmetrical. Maybe next time I will get it right. I’m very new to crocheting so I am never surprised by the outcome of my work, even when it turns out beautiful! 🙂

Mamie, sure you can! The yarn used in the pattern is a bit thinner, so your heart will end up a bit bigger than what’s indicated in the pattern if that’s okay with you.

–> Am I meant to connect the round with the slip stitch and then do 2 half-double crochets in the next two stitches?

Hi Jai,
Everything after the colon at the end of the round is the stitch count. So you should ave 69 dc and 2 hdc when you are done round 3. You don’t have to make another 2 hdc.

Hi Laura! I don’t have a blanket pattern made from this heart, but you can use it as an applique if you’d like. Sorry again!

Hello…I was wondering if someone could help me understand a part of one of your beautiful patterns. It’s the 1 called Sweetheart Valentine Heart (I’ve listed the link above). My confusion is in Round 1, right after it says dc in the next 5 ch, it says to dc5tog {I understand how to do the dc5tog stitch} however there are only ch sts there, not any in DC sts there to be able to do that. Could someone please explain to me what I’m doing wrong or missing?

Hi Kerry!
You can make the dc5tog into the chain stitches, you will use the next 5 chains that are there. It is no different than making it into any other stitch, such as double crochet stitches. You will insert your hook into the chains to make your dc5tog. Let me know if you need more help with it!
