Stick A Flower On It
By Veronica Smith – 9 CommentsSo you’re in a hurry for a personalized present or maybe you have lots of presents to do and not enough time. Do you need lots of cute little things in a hurry, maybe for your child’s scout group or her little friends, the office people or play group mums who you’d like to give a little gift to at Christmas?
Then all you need to do is stick a flower on it. Figuratively speaking.
You can make crochet flowers, music notes, hearts or pretty well any other shape. Applique comes in a range of shapes such as car’s, dinosaurs, animals, hearts, bells, smiley faces and lots more. Crochet fridge magnets or brooches minus the magnet or pin make wonderful applique’s as well. Let your imagination run wild.
Stitch or glue them to just about anything you want. Purchase a headband, a beanie, a hat or a simple item of clothing. A nice hard covered diary or address book can be given a classy update and makes a quick affordable present. Purchased cushions and baby blankets get a quick face-lift and have a personal touch. The first thing that comes to mind for a lot of us is flowers when it comes to giving something a face-lift but ‘boy’ things can be attached to items for men big and small. The afore mentioned diary for example for the bigger variety of male and something on a sweater or hat for the littler ones. Crochet golf clubs, cars, coffee mugs and associated boy items.
Let your imagination run wild. What else have you embellished with crochet?

great job and very creative
how to make a crochet flower huhuhu?
This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing your project.
I was wondering what tips or tricks you have to teach a beginner crocheter how to keep stitches even? I am really struggling with it and not sure how to change it or make it look better.
Thanks!!!! Is this a free pattern, i wanted to stick some on a blanket i made. please message me back with the pattern
@brenben – I’m a beginner myself, and I’ve found that the secret is in the tension. Not too loose, not too tight. I make lots of amigurumi so I tend to give the stitch a tug before a move on to the next. Of course, I’m looking for tight stitches.
My biggest problem is in how to hold the yarn and hook properly so I don’t have to change how I’m holding it midway through each stitch. Keeps slowing me down something awful.
Hi,
What pattern did you use for the flowers in the picture frame??
Sorry for the late responses. As for the flower pattern’s i just made them up as i went. I have been crocheting for many years and i know in the beginning that i was using patterns however for many year now i have just been ‘winging it’ so to speak. Search Crochet Spot’s patterns and you will find many lovely flower patterns. Clink on the link for “flowers” in the article and it will take you to a lovely simple one however there are many others. You can leave them single for starters or you can make them in slightly different sizes and colors and put them on top of each other to create a layered effect, maybe a bead in the center if you like. You can achieve the different sizes by using different yarn and hook or just vary the hook size with the same yarn.
TENSION: unfortunately it is the whole practice thing. I have had success in teaching students with a scarf. Grab a hook and thread, Not tiny but not huge. Make a few chain until you get to the width you think you want a scarf. Do lots of rows of nothing but SC, 4″ +. Then when you do that swap to DC and do some more and then back again. Not a terribly exciting scarf however just doing plain repetitive work really helps your tension. I promise if i find my magic want i will help you. Until then it is just repetition. Once you have mastered the boring tension you can change over to other patterns.
okay thanks!
