April Fool’s Crochet Pattern: Cat Toy
By Rachel Choi – 16 CommentsThe cats all over the world have voted and it’s unanimous! This is the best cat toy ever and you get the crochet pattern for free here on Crochet Spot. The pattern is fast and easy, but the best part is you can adjust the ball to make it any size you desire! Just follow the instructions within the pattern to get started. |
Skill Level: |
Finished Size: as big or as small as you desire. Ask your cat what he/she wants.
Materials:
Medium Weight Yarn (your cat’s favorite color)
Crochet Hook (the bigger the better)
Index finger and thumb (or equivalent fingers as necessary)
Scissors
Cat(s)
Special Crochet Stitch
Wrap – Lightly grip the yarn between index finger and thumb. Revolve 360 degrees around as indicated in pattern.
Note: the wrap may be tricky for some, just remember that practice makes perfect!
Gauge: don’t worry about it, your cat won’t care.
Crochet Pattern: Cat Toy
Row 1: holding crochet hook upside down, wrap 20 times around bottom of hook: 20 wrap
Note: be sure there are no spaces between wraps on row 1
Row 2: overlapping previous row and working in opposite direction, wrap 20 times: 20 wrap
Repeat row 2, until your work looks like a ball
Row 3: slide work off of hook and turn 90 degrees, wrap 20 times: 20 wrap
Repeat row 3, until toy is as large as you desire, then finish off.

P.S. My cat loves this toy, I swear!
LOL! That’s great! My cat’s are forever going after my yarn when I’m crocheting (which is all the time)! Love it!
hahahha! That’s funny!!!!! Hee hee hee
Love the cat toy! I KNOW it is my cat’s favorite! I’ll be crocheting away, and suddenly the yarn coming through my fingers is wet….Yep, the cat has the yarn in his mouth from side to side, and I am pulling it through that little space in his teeth on the sides of his mouth! Oooh! Cat spit! If people I give things to only knew what their item had been through! Each item has incorporated not only a great deal of cat spit, but loose cat fur as well!
Made with a lot of love from each and every crafter in your family! 🙂
This is the most classic of cat toys, for sure! My cats think it’s divine. The hovering vet tech in me wanted to add this, though: always supervise your cat (or dog!) when they are playing with anything long and stringy. If they ingest a length of yarn, string, thread, etc. it can cause all kinds of intestinal injuries, most of which have to be corrected by surgery. I have literally assisted with about a dozen surgeries in the past few years where a cat or dog has swallowed something elongated (pantyhose in a dog was my favorite — so gross!).
Very clever!
I totally don’t get it. Is this a stitch or are you just wrapping a ball…Got a picture or two? Sorry, I think my cat would like it… maybe I am over thinking it?
You’re just making a ball of yarn.
Love it & so would my cat!! Hey, this is an excellent idea for scrap yarn 🙂
Thanks for the laugh Rachel…Much appreciated!! 🙂
Way ahead of ya, have already made several for my cat!
I laughed so hard because I actually do this! =) LOL! Love this post.
Oh my goodness that is hysterical! I have to hide my yarn when I knit or crochet – it is ridiculous! My cats love yarn – they just found the green gardening tape roll over the weekend.
The neat thing is… you just taught how to make a center pull ball. Handy info to have. Maybe we need more pictures for a “proper” tutorial! LOL
That’s funny, I didn’t even realize that!
Here’s a link to the actual pull ball tutorial if anyone is interested: Winding Yarn into a Center Pull Skein
I have a solid black cat except for 1 hair that is white. This is true and she is a absolute terror. Even at 4 years old she thinks she is a kitten and romps and plays constantly. Good thing I built her a 6′ wide x 4′ across x 7′ tall playhouse. Her cutest tricks though are with my crochet projects. If I get up to go to the bathroom or to get a drink she takes my crochet hook while I am gone. If I do not put my crochet work in a closet when I go to bed she takes the item I am working as a teddy bear like toy. She actually takes them to bed to sleep with and I get up and find a trail of yarn or thread through the house.
Wool IS a cat’s toy…Miss your cat? Don’t search! Just sit down on couch, put yarn beside you and start crotching – less than a minute, you yarn is getting alive and someone fluffy is sitting very proud in a nest beside you…. 😉 I have 2 proud Hunters of the Lost Yarn! 🙂
