Crochet Pattern: Round Heirloom Blanket

Posted in Best Crochet Patterns on January 15th, 2011 by Erin Burger – 7 Comments
There is nothing better than a handmade gift, especially one that has a classic look to it that could be passed down easily from generation to generation. This round blanket is smaller in size; perfect for a baby blanket, excellent for car trips because of it’s extra thickness or as a lap blanket for cozy winter nights spent crocheting under a cabled blanket!

In this round blanket BPDC and FPDC (Front and Back Post Stitches) are the key to successfully crocheting a classic and timeless piece. If you are not familiar with these stitches, check them out in the link above and then practice them with this beginner’s cabling pattern: Cabled Headband.

The pictured afghan is made in 100% peruvian wool, but the pattern can be made in any type of yarn. The gauge and finished size is for sport weight yarn, but if you decide to use a heavier weight yarn (which will make thicker cables) please check your gauge for an accurate and excellent finished project!

Knowing a pattern’s skill level before you start it is an important part of the crocheting process. If you pick a pattern that is too easy for you, you might be bored easily and find the project tedious. If you pick a pattern beyond your skill level or knowledge you might become frustrated and give up! Using the basic Crochet Skill Level chart and paging through some different level patterns and stitches can help you be well aware of what you’re getting into at each level. Clicking on any link in this post will take you to a tutorial or pattern that will help you master each skill level!

Crochet Pattern: Musical Notes

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on January 6th, 2011 by Erin Burger – 30 Comments
These fairly small appliques would be perfect sewn onto a musical lovers blanket or scarf! The pattern is also great for using up scraps since each note takes just a very small amount of yarn. Experiment with different sizes of notes by using different hooks and yarns. Because of the long staff on the eighth note, take care when sewing this applique on, I recommend tightly pinning it on first to ensure the staff of the note stays straight.

How to Crochet: Aran Bobble Stitch

Posted in Tutorials and Help on January 4th, 2011 by Erin Burger – 22 Comments

All kinds of crafts have a long legacy of classic techniques that had meaning to the peoples they originated with. In crochet and knitting Aran stitches are great examples of this. Although most are originally knit stitches, some are crochet as well and have been passed down for many generations.

This particular stitch is made of panels of 17 plus three. One panel is perfect for a scarf, a thick headband (or earwarmer) or a smaller sized washcloth. If you wanted a wider project you could either whipstitch appropriately length-ed panels of the 17 plus 3 together, like a quilt.

Multi-Colored Scallop Stitch

I’m sure most of you, even beginners, have heard of the crocheting go-to stitch ‘Shell Stitch’ (see a version of it here: Stitches for your Crocheting Arsenal: Part Two) The scallop stitch is very similar, but usually involves more stitches within each ‘scallop’ and each scallop occupies a larger number of spaces. I recently saw a very old scrap afghan at a garage sale using a stitch similar to this one. I spotted from nearly a block away!
