Crochet Pattern: Ribbed Mitered Square Tawashi

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on April 13th, 2011 by Claire Ortega-Reyes – 19 Comments
This useful item combines three of my favorite things in crochet: texture, miter squares and tawashis (hence its very straightforward name).

If you haven’t done a mitered square before, then you’re in for a treat. I love how it is worked back and forth in rows, and end up looking like a perfectly symmetrical square at the end of each row. So, if you’re not satisfied with the size you have, it’s easy to adjust the size–just stop whenever you feel it’s done!

So even if this pattern is for a tawashi, it’s easy to change into a dishcloth, potholder, or kitchen towel of the size you want–just add or decrease rows.

Crochet Pattern: Optical Illusion Tawashi

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on April 8th, 2011 by Claire Ortega-Reyes – 13 Comments

The tawashi has gained much popularity over the years. Originally from Japan, today knitters and crocheters all around the world have joined in the fun. And who wouldn’t like the idea of making their own scrubbers, made of 100% acrylic (read:ridiculously cheap) yarn, and save the environment all at the same time? It can be used with or without detergent, too, so it not just helps save the environment, but gives your everyday budget a break, too.

Skill Level: crochet skill level easy

Finished Size: 5.5″ across (excluding strap)

Materials:
100% Acrylic Medium Weight Yarn in Main Color (blue) and Contrast Color (pink)
Crochet Hook H (5.00 mm)
crochet yarn size 4

Crochet Pattern: Super Simple Baby Socks

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on March 31st, 2011 by Erin Burger – 30 Comments

This simple baby tube-sock pattern is perfect for beginners because of the easy-toe and easy construction. It’s also a great way to introduce a beginner to fingering weight (sock weight) yarn, which may seem like a daunting material at first. Sock yarn is great for Spring projects because of it’s light weight and is available at most stores in a variety of different fibers. This sock could fit a newborn up to six month old baby, depending on how stretchy your yarn is, maybe even older!
Different sizes can easily be created by chaining more or less for the length of the sock and making more rows to increase the width of the sock.

Skill Level: crochet skill level intermediate

Finished Size: Uncuffed, socks measure 6″ (15.24 cm) in length and are 3″ (7.62 cm) wide at top

Materials:
100 yards Fingering Weight Yarn

Crochet Pattern: Blossom Doily

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on March 24th, 2011 by Erin Burger – 14 Comments
This doily was designed with a similar idea in mind as The Hipster Doily; using sock or fingering yarn in modern colors to update the idea of an old fashioned doily made with cotton lace weight yarns and tiny steel hooks. I love the way this doily looks either like a flower or a star, making it versatile for decorating.

Skill Level: crochet skill level intermediate

Finished Size: Approx. 8″ (20.32 cm) in diameter

Materials:
60 yards Fingering Weight Yarn

Crochet Pattern: Shamrock Shawlette

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on March 3rd, 2011 by Claire Ortega-Reyes – 36 Comments
Want to get lucky (and keep warm, too)? This eye-catching shawl is deceptively simple to make. Made with worsted yarn and size L (8.00 mm) hook, the main body is really just a granny triangle. The key to the unique look lies in the shamrock edging: 3-leaf clovers all around, with a lucky 4-leaf clover in the center.
