Need a Crochet Stitch Marker? (You May Already Have One on You!)

Posted in Fun Ramblings on March 11th, 2014 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 45 Comments

Stitch markers are one of the most basic and sometimes the one of the most fun crochet tools. For those who haven’t used them yet, crochet stitch markers are a removable tool that you place on your crochet as you are working. They serve the purpose of marking a spot in your crochet work where you are supposed to “do something,” such as start a new round, make an increase, change colors, etc. Stitch markers are often mentioned in the pattern but sometimes you’re crocheting along and you realize you could benefit from using a stitch marker. Stitch markers can be helpful in keeping count on long pieces, and a single stitch marker can hold your active crochet stitch in place while your transporting your work from place to place!

I wanted to share some of the random things I’ve used as stitch markers over the years. While I love fancy handmade stitch markers from Etsy, and I have certainly used the perfectly-sized, removable, plastic stitch markers from Clover, I have used the following items to hold my crochet for just a moment, or for a while.

“Red Carpet Ready” Crochet

Posted in Fun Ramblings on March 4th, 2014 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 2 Comments

How many of you love watching awards shows? I definitely think it’s fun, although I could do without all of the judgment about who looks terrible. I love to see the celebrities dressed up in their finery, but the catty criticism has got to go! They usually all look great, and if they don’t- oh well! They should still be having fun attending the Oscars! Right?

Anyway, since film awards season has finally culminated in the ultimate gala, the Academy Awards, I was thinking about how crochet can be glamorous. Crochet is a very versatile craft and has a long history of being used for formal wear. Futhermore, many major celebrities crochet, including Alyssa Milano, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Eva Longoria, and Meryl Streep! (Source) So why not glam it up with crochet?

Imagine you’re attending a gala and would like to accessorize your formal dress with crochet. Before you say that you never attend formal events, don’t forget that prom & wedding seasons are just around the corner, so you just may have occasion to try these suggestions & Crochet Spot patterns!

Crochet 1-2-3! 3 Great Patterns to Get a Kid Crocheting

Posted in Fun Ramblings, Tutorials and Help on February 25th, 2014 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – Be the first to comment

The inspiration for this post came from the wonderful comments in one of my previous posts, Crochet is Child’s Play. I loved hearing everyone’s stories about learning crochet and then passing it on. One Crochet Spotter, Pearl, mentioned that she was trying to teach her six-year-old brother and asked for advice. Before long, Marcia G (a fellow Crochet Spotter) directed Pearl to Rachel’s “How to Crochet” instructions. Hooray! This is EXACTLY what the Crochet Spot community is about!

Crochet Sport?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on February 15th, 2014 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 7 Comments

Hey, Crochet Spotters! Are you Crochet Sporters, too? 😀

With both the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics dominating the U.S. media recently, I got to thinking about what a fine combination sports and crochet are. How many of you were playing with yarn and hook during the Superbowl & Olympic Opening Ceremonies? I most certainly was yarn crafting (and tweeting) the whole way through!

As I’m sure most of you know, joining crochet with sport is nothing new! I thought it would be fun to list out a few ways (both formal and informal) that we can enjoy various sporting events while weilding hooks!

Crochet is Child’s Play!

Posted in Fun Ramblings on January 23rd, 2014 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 12 Comments

Since I’m really into crochet, I consume a lot of media about crochet. You’d be surprised; if you keep your eyes open for crochet, you’ll see it popping up everywhere! While reading or listening to interviews with crochet designers, there is one theme I see popping up over and over again.

“My mother/grandmother/babysitter taught me to crochet when I was a kid. (She probably wanted to keep me busy/quiet/out of her hair.) All I knew how to do was make chains, but I would do that for hours and hours.”

Seriously, I’ve heard this theme (with variations) touched upon multiple times by people who as adults are avid crocheters and crochet designers!

The way I see it, we need more of these people in the world! What a wonderful way to get a child started on a craft that will serve them for their entire lives. What’s more, we all could benefit from the future designs of this crocheting child! Are you with me?

Can I Sell My Crochet?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on January 18th, 2014 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 21 Comments

Crochet Spot fans, we can talk honestly, can’t we? I’ll get straight to the point. I’ve got a LOT of crochet. Why? Because (like you) I love to crochet! Sometimes I crochet something I don’t even WANT to keep because I just want to try the pattern.

Sometimes I crochet the same thing over and over again because I like the pattern and maybe want to change it up a little. I wonder what it would look like in one yarn or another. I may add stripes or a border. Then, before I know it, I have a dozen of something and I don’t know what to do with them. (Hello, Rachel’s Credit Card Holder!)
