Do You Have a Favorite Crochet Hook?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on March 26th, 2010 by Rachel Choi – 37 Comments

Is there a hook you just love more than the rest in your collection? Or do you not play favorites? You may like one hook more, for its nice material or its convenient size. Perhaps it’s a special hook, because it was passed down from one generation to the next.

My favorite hook is my 3.25 mm Boyle hook. Since I work with a lot of medium weight yarn, this hook seems to find its way into almost every project I work on. It’s the perfect size for weaving in a loose end here and there, even if I do use a yarn needle. My 3.25 mm is very smooth and small, making it easy to maneuver into tight spaces. This hook was also my first hook that wasn’t plastic! It’s not a fancy hook, but it sure is my best friend when I need it.

Do you have a favorite crochet hook? If so, why?

Fun and Functional Crochet

A Guest Post by Sarah Maccarelli.

It’s upsetting to hear people say, “It’s cute, but what is it?” when referring to something you spent a lot of time and effort to make.

I’m writing this article today to inform you that all those adorable, crocheted items really can be functional. All it takes is a little creative thinking.

I enjoy making all sorts of crocheted items, including obviously functional scarves, handbags, and jewelry. On the flip side, amigurumi animals and other cute items are so much faster and easier to make, but they can do more than just sit on a shelf and look cute.

Suggest Crochet Patterns for Spring

Posted in Fun Ramblings on March 21st, 2010 by Rachel Choi – 18 Comments
I’m so glad that spring time is here!!! It’s been a rough winter with the record breaking snow storms of 2010. If you live in the northeastern part of the U.S. you know what I’m talking about. Now it’s time for the spring flowers, warm weather, and warm weather crocheting. I hate it when people say crocheting is only for the winter. Heck, I crochet all year around and I hope you do too! spring flowers

Do you think the change in weather changes the crochet projects you work on?
What are some things you would like to crochet during the spring?
I’m really interested to find out what kind of patterns you’re looking for and to get started on designing them!

I Will Never Crochet A …

Posted in Fun Ramblings on March 18th, 2010 by Rachel Choi – 38 Comments
… toilet seat cover! That’s my answer, what is yours?

As much as I love to crochet and I bet you do too, there has to be something that you don’t think you will ever want to crochet. For me it is a toilet seat cover. I know there are plenty of crochet patterns for toilet seat covers and many people do crochet them. You can even buy toilet seat covers in the store. But personally, I just don’t get the point of them (crocheted or not). I like my toilet seat just the way it is, without a cover.

What item will you never crochet?

Would Your Dream Job Involve Crochet?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on March 11th, 2010 by Rachel Choi – 27 Comments

I love reading the “Quit Your Day Job” posts that Etsy publishes. If you’re not familiar with the “Quit Your Day Job” series, they are written interviews with people who have successfully quit their day job by making a craft related business.

For me and I’m sure for many others, these posts are very inspirational! After all, lots of people would love to be self employed and make a living doing what they love, especially if they already do it as a hobby.

My question for you is, if you could have your dream job what would it be? Would it include crocheting?

Why is Crocheting So Much Fun?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on March 1st, 2010 by Rachel Choi – 14 Comments

I don’t know about you, but I have a blast when I pick up my yarn and hook to crochet! Below are some of my reasons for why I think crocheting is so much fun. Feel free to share your reasons, by leaving a comment!

Crocheting is so much fun because…

  • I can turn an ordinary ball of yarn into something useful, like a hat, slipper, blanket or toy.
  • It’s like being in a secret club. We talk in crochet code.
  • I can make cute things that make me go, “Awww…”
  • I can gather with crochet friends and crochet the day away.
  • Crocheting relieves stress, especially from work or nagging family members.
  • I love teaching, especially when it’s about how to crochet.
  • When I’m done a project, I get the feeling of accomplishment, the best feeling of all.
  • It allows me to meet new people, who also are crazy about crochet.
  • There’s nothing better than the happy face of the person I gift my crochet item to… as long as they like it.

Crocheted Urinal

Posted in Fun Ramblings on February 19th, 2010 by Rachel Choi – 32 Comments

I’ve seen lots of quirky crocheted things, but this one has to be at the top of the list. I’m not sure if I’m suppose to think this is cute or be completely disgusted. But it sure gave me a good laugh and I hope it does the same for you.

I have to admit, it’s pretty well made.

How Many Crochet Projects Are You Working On?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on February 18th, 2010 by Rachel Choi – 45 Comments

I remember back in the day I would go project crazy, having 10 different projects going at one time! I would get bored of one project and start another. Then I realized that I didn’t have enough space to store so many unfinished projects and I’d need to eventually finish what I’ve started.

Today I learned to only have 1 or 2 crochet projects going at a time. One project is normally small, and if there is a second project, it would be a bigger item, like a shawl, blanket or set. This seems to work better for me compared to going wild with 10 different projects. Too many projects can be overwhelming. Having 1 or 2 projects keeps me focused and organized. I even realized that I can get more done!

What about you? How many projects are you working on?

Crochet for a Cause…What’s Your Cause?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on February 15th, 2010 by Rachel Choi – 27 Comments

Crocheters everywhere are crocheting for a cause! Whether you’re crocheting afghans for the homeless, caps for cancer patients, or toys for children, they are all great causes in my book. I’m always looking for new causes to crochet for and to share with others.

One of the perks of the internet today is that you can find lots of charities that you can mail your crochet items to if you aren’t sure of local places to give to. If you would like to learn about different charities that accept crocheted items, check out the Crochet Spot Charity Page to find a cause that is right you!
