How Much Would You Pay for Yarn?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on July 24th, 2009 by Rachel Choi – 42 Comments
Today I went to my local yarn shop (LYS) and I saw some of the most amazing yarns! I’ve always wanted to crochet with mohair, alpaca, bamboo and all those other fancy yarns. But I just couldn’t buy anything at the local yarn shop. After all why would I buy 1 skein of yarn for $65 when I can go to the craft store and get one for $3. Granted that the $65 skein was very pretty, but hey, I’m frugal and I admit it. yarn

The most I’ve ever spend for yarn was $5 for a small skein of %100 wool (I wanted to felt). What about you? How much do you spend on yarn?

What’s So Great About Ravelry?

Posted in Fun Ramblings on July 17th, 2009 by Rachel Choi – 28 Comments

I joined Ravelry a few months ago just to see what all the hoot and holla is all about. I was told it was an awesome site for knitters and crocheters. But till this day, I still don’t know what’s so great about it. It feels like I’m missing something.

I noticed that there’s neat features to electronically organize your stash, hooks and the projects you’re working on. My only problems is that I don’t have the patience to enter in all the info and keep up with it. But if you do it, then kudos to you!

My username there is “crochetspot” so feel free to add me as a friend. Also, let me know what you think of Ravelry!

Cutting My Own Hair

Posted in Fun Ramblings on July 12th, 2009 by Rachel Choi – 9 Comments

This weekend I took a break from crocheting to adventure into cutting my own hair. I’ve never cut my own hair before or anyone else’s until now. Okay, maybe I did cut my doll’s hair when I was a kid, but I don’t think that counts (it turned out really bad).

Good thing for youtube, that wonderful site with all those videos! I saw one with this girl cutting her own hair and it actually looked pretty nice. Oh, there are lots of good crochet videos on youtube too!

My hair was long to begin with so there was lots of room for error. I only snipped off a couple of inches, just to get rid of those horrible split ends. The hair is still long enough to run down my back and maybe next week I’ll work up the nerve to cut some more, a little shorter would be better. I didn’t want to get too scissor happy on my first attempt and end up looking like a ball of fun fur yarn.

Sorry I don’t have a picture, I was way too excited to take one.

Crochet Tampons…Really?!

Posted in Fun Ramblings on July 8th, 2009 by Rachel Choi – 50 Comments

Of all the things that I find online, yes, I found a crocheted tampon!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the idea of crocheting a tampon and reusing it makes me cringe! I’m sure at some time before tampons and pads were invented, women must have used something and probably did reuse them. But today, when we do have nicely engineered things to stick in specific places, why in the world would you want to crochet one? Maybe to prove that anything can be crocheted? Or to save the environment from waste? To save money?

Whatever the reason is, I’ll stick to the store bought ones, I like those!

By the way, sorry for grossing you out if I did.

Now on Etsy!

Posted in Fun Ramblings, News on July 7th, 2009 by Rachel Choi – 4 Comments

Alright I gave in. I finally made my Etsy store! If you visit Etsy.com often, feel free to stop by my shop and take a look: rachelscrochet.etsy.com

It has the same things that are in the Crochet Spot Store. The only difference is that in the Crochet Spot store you can immediately download patterns or sign up for a Premium Pattern Membership. In the Etsy store, you have to wait for me to send the pattern to you in an email. Oh ya, the Crochet Spot store also saves your purchased patterns so you can download them again if you accidentally loose it.

I must admit the better store is the one on this site, but hey, I still love the Etsy store too!

I’m 21!

Posted in Fun Ramblings on July 1st, 2009 by Rachel Choi – 50 Comments
For some reason turning 21 is suppose to be some big celebration, but I’m not really sure why. Today I’ll probably work, eat, sleep and breath just like I normally do.

So if you can tell me what’s so great about turning 21, that would be awesome! Or if you’d like to share what you did or will do on your 21st birthday, that would be awesome too!

Crochet Spot Store is Finally Here!!!

Posted in Fun Ramblings, News on June 29th, 2009 by Rachel Choi – 2 Comments

It’s been way too long and too much procrastination on my side, but finally it’s here!!! If you just stumbled upon my blog you might not know what I’m talking about, but in a nut shell, 3 months ago I said that I was going to open a store to help support funding all the supplies I need to keep making patterns for Crochet Spot and to get a new video camera so that I can start making video tutorials. So here I am today, so happy to finally have a Crochet Spot Store!!!

But don’t be scared!!! I still intend on making free patterns and tutorials. I just need a means to support doing it. The more money I can raise, the more I can make and share for free!

Any support that you can provide will be greatly appreciated! The store contains patterns that go above and beyond my previous patterns in quality. If you find some that you like, feel free to make a purchase knowing that your money will be used to support this site.

Also, if you like multiple patterns you may choose to opt-in on the “Premium Pattern Membership” to save you some money. The membership is $10 for all the patterns in the store. In addition, lots of new patterns will be added each month so you will also receive all the new patterns each month for $10 each month (or the equivalent in other currencies). Hopefully this membership option will make it easier to share patterns with you all without having you sell a kidney.

As I know from experience there is always someone that needs help more than I do. So to kick off the Grand Opening of the store, 50% of all Premium Pattern Memberships made during June 29th – July 31, 2009 will be donated to Project H.O.M.E. who’s goal is to end homelessness in Philadelphia (the city I’m from)! Feel free to check out their site. They do amazing work!!!

I love being able to share new and exciting things on this site with you all!!! All the money raised in the store will be a great help for me to continue to share what I love most: crochet!

So go on and check out the new store and let me know what you think!

Yay Pictures!!!

Woohoo!!! These are photos of some of the things that I’ve been working on for next week’s opening of the Crochet Spot Store on Monday June 29th. Woohoo!!! I’m so excited! I’ve been wanting to share these with you all for a while.

crochet lacey shawl crochet animal bookmarks

Also, I’m making a “Premium Pattern Membership” option that allows you to get all the patterns in the store for just $10 a month, which includes all the new patterns that I’ll be adding each month. This saves you money while giving you access to all the patterns in the store. Non Premium Pattern Members will still have the ability to purchase patterns individually as they desire.

This store will help to support running Crochet Spot and a portion of the earnings during the Grand Opening will be donated to charity!

Let me know what you think!

Yes, it’s a hamburger dress! I think it’s funny, cute, creative and a bit silly all at the same time. I just had to share this with you since it gave me a good smile.

Raising Money for Charity

Posted in Fun Ramblings, News on June 16th, 2009 by Rachel Choi – 15 Comments

I want to pick a charity to donate a portion of my earnings from the Crochet Spot Store that I’ll be opening June 29th, which by the way is coming up very soon! I got this idea when a friend of mine had a birthday party and themed it to raise money to fight pediactric cancer. I thought this was a great idea!!! Although I’m not a big party person, I thought that it would be a great opportunity to use my store grand opening to help raise some money for a good cause. I’m not sure exactly how much I’ll be donating yet, but I can tell you that it will be a nice percentage.

I have some great charities in mind, but do you have any in mind?? Feel free to tell me about a charity even if it’s not crochet related!
