Tunisian full stitch, as its name implies, is good for creating something that is bulky and heavy. Blankets, rugs, and mats are just a few applications for for this easy-to-make stitch. One thing to keep in mind is that the tfs has a natural bias and may need to be combined with other stitches in addition to being blocked to straighten it out. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a pom pom is “an ornamental ball or tuft used especially on clothing, caps, or costumes”. Technically, they are of no real necessity compared to a hat or scarf, and yet they are so adorable and cute! Who doesn’t like a tiny tuft of yarn on the top of their hat or on the end of their scarf?!

Pom poms are incredibly easy ways to brighten up any project. Besides the aforementioned, you can also attach them to the corners of a pillow, border of a blanket, or anywhere else you might want them. I’ve even seen an entire baby’s rug made out of large, plump pom poms!

Today, I want to show you some of the ways you can make pom poms. As with most things, there are special tools you can buy at nearly any craft store that are specifically made for creating pom poms. But for some of us, the Do-It-Yourself method is more appealing. So stick around for some easy how-to’s!

Decreasing on the forward pass of a Tunisian crochet row is not always feasible, especially when working with stitches that are not worked in the vertical bar. Luckily, working a decrease on the return pass is fairly easy to do.

Decreases in Tunisian crochet can be worked on either the forward pass or the return pass. The forward pass decrease is easy to do, but is best suited for the Tunisian Simple stitch or other stitches that are worked in the vertical bar. Finishing off a Tunisian crochet project is a simple and painless process that uses a skill you probably already know– the slip stitch. If you happen to also be a knitter, the process should feel familiar.

Insert your hook into the first stitch. If finishing off in pattern, insert the hook as if working a tss, tks, or whichever stitch the pattern calls for. (In this case, I’m using tks)

If you can start off a Tunisian crochet project, then you can do this increase, which is basically adding a foundation to the beginning of a row. Note: If you’ve never done Tunisian crochet, start with this tutorial: How to Crochet: Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS)

In Tunisian crochet, there are three types of increases: ones made at the beginning or a row, ones made in the middle of a row, and ones made at the end of a row. This tutorial will show you how to increase in the middle of a row. Since what you do in the next row is what determines how your stitches look, this increase will work for any Tunisian stitch.

First work up to the place where you would like to increase. Here is a picture of the space where you will insert your hook. It is underneath the horizontal bar that runs between the vertical bars.
