Crochet Pattern: Barbie Doll Ruffle Dress

I pulled my Barbie doll out from my basement yesterday and remembered how much I loved dressing her up. Here is a very simple dress that just crocheted up for her. To make this dress, start out with a rubber band that fits snugly above the doll’s bust. This will help hold the dress up. Then single crochet inside the ring of the rubber band to start the dress. The crochet pattern below will walk you through each round of the dress as you make pretty ruffles for the bottom.

Finished Size: 4 ½†(11.5 cm) long, approximately 4†(10 cm) wide at bottom
Materials:
Medium Weight Yarn
Crochet Hook F (3.75 mm)
Rubber Band that fits snugly above doll’s bust

Crochet Pattern: Dress
Round 1: 30 sc in rubber band, place marker: 30 sc
Note: Rubber band should now be completely covered
Round 2 – 5: sc in each sc around: 30 sc
Round 6: (decrease, sc in next 4 sc) around: 25 sc
Round 7: (decrease, sc in next 3 sc) around: 20 sc
Round 8 – 10: sc in each sc around: 20 sc
Round 11: 2 sc in each sc around: 40 sc
Round 12: 2 sc in each sc around: 80 sc
Round 13 – 19: sc in each sc around: 80 sc
Round 20: 2 sc in each sc around, sl st in next sc, finish off: 160 sc

I have found overtime, rubber bands will dry out and break. Would a tiny elastic ponytail thingy do the trick instead of a rubber band? This dress is really cute. Gonna add it to my growing pile of “want to make”.
Sure an elastic ponytail holder or any other elastic would work too! Just make sure that it fits snuggly above the doll’s bust so that it can hold the dress up.
made the dress it didnt turn out like yours ,but of course i lost count of the stiches once the kids got up, mine had a little flair in the skirt so now it barbies patty dress lol…..
hi, I’m sorry, this has nothing to do w/Barbie(although her crocheted dress is darling;all I made for mine was snow skis w/popsicle sticks).for a few yrs now, I’ve been trying to find out how to look up dolls that my g’ma & great g’ma use to crochet dresses, hats, and panties for. I’ve looked on numerous sites & I’m obviously not using the key word. The dolls stand about 7 & half ” tall & are hard plastic w/moveable arms and head, but legs are just apart of the body, and don’t move.( from 30’s & or 40’s) Do you have any idea what they’re called? I appreciate your time so much so if you’re too busy to answer this, I understand, I just put in ‘crocheted doll dresses’ and yours popped up. My mom was an avid crocheter(?) & I never got around to having her teach me.She just died over a year ago, now it’s too late, but I got all of those dolls! Thanks so much for reading. Barb

Im looking for the same hard plastic doll body. My late mother made christmas tree angels tops and they were on these doll bodies. Same size and hard plastic and they came in various hair colors. The hair on all her angels are just falling apart from drying out I suppose. Please let me know if you find them please. I have looked everywhere also and have not had one hit on them. Youd think someone would know. Thanks so much and good luck. Ill continue to look .

How do you decrease to fit a Skipper type doll? I went down a crochet hook size and used stretchy fingering yarn, and it was still too big.

Hi Isela, after round 7, try adding a row like this: (decrease, sc in next 2 sc) around: 15 sc
That will make it even tighter around the waist.

Hi Ruby, I’m not sure how many sc you’d need. I haven’t made one for a newborn. Maybe you can measure around the baby’s waist and see how wide it is then make as many sc to get that width.
Love this pattern! Have been using a pattern to make different versions of a dress and your idea of using a rubber band is awesome! I will be using your top as it’s easier than mine and combining it with different styles for bottom of dress. Thank you for sharing this pattern!

I’m confused about round 6, decrease, sc in next 4 sc around: 25 sc? I’ve pulled loop thru 1sc then next sc the next sc then next sc then thru all four loops on my hook . That doesn’t work math wise. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Carole, to make the decrease you’ll pull up a loop through one sc then the next sc, then yarn over and pull through all 3 loops that are on your hook. Here’s a link to the decrease tutorial of you need it: How to Crochet: Single Crochet Decrease
After the decrease you’ll make a sc in each of the next 4 single crochets. Then repeat those steps all the way around.
I am so,confused on 7 I did the decrease did the sc 20, my thing is it does not go all the way around, please help or a video

Round 7: (decrease, sc in next 3 sc) around: 20 sc
You are going to work the instructions within the parentheses ( ) all the way around until you reach the beginning. When you are done, you’ll have a total of 20 sc (the number after the colon is total the stitch count for the round). So you will basically be doing… decrease, sc in next 3 sc, decrease sc in next 3 sc, decrease, sc in next 3 sc, … etc. until you reach the beginning.

I made 2 of the dresses today. The 1st was to large so I reduced to 25 around band. It was a little off from the decreases but fit better. I have 3 Barbies so I am making 3. LOL thanks for the pattern. I would appreciate any info on other Barbie patterns. And those old dolls and clothes as well.

I love crochet i’m not really good at it, and I wanted to make clothes for my niece’s barbies, i thought this was a cute summer dress but it didn’t look so well at the middle of the dress so it became a skirt and my niece loves it, she’ s been wanting a cute yarn layered skirt for her barbie so if it doesn’t work as a dress it could be a skirt a top or a mini dress.
This dress is precious. I finished it in just a couple of hours. I made 3 sc in each stitch on the last row of thin metallic yarn, chain-stitched a belt and made a tiny flower for the bodice out of the same yarn – very glam :-). Thank you so much for sharing this pattern!!!
I used the little pony ties instead of rubberbands, and found that they work very well. Have made several versions using this pattern as my springboard. That is what I like about Pinterest… others give me ideas to start from, and then I can use my own creativity to make something unique. The dresses are so much easier for my great-niece to put on her Barbie, and each one is totally different. Thanks!

Just came across your dress pattern. I was looking for something quick and easy to make for used Barbie dolls I fix up and donate to a church mission group. I am just learning to crochet (because I hate sewing those tiny doll clothes), and although I can do a few stitches pretty good, putting them together is still confusing to me. I appreciate your clear tutorial on decreasing stitches cause I didn’t understand that before at all. Haven’t made the dress yet, but maybe tonight I’ll give it a try.
