Crochet Pattern: Four Leaf Clover

Whether it is St. Patrick’s Day or not, everyone can use a lucky four leaf clover. You can use it as a fridgie, glue a magnet to the back and stick it to your refrigerator, or perhaps as a pin for your shirt or hat. It also makes a great coaster! This crocheted four leaf clover will look great where ever you decide to place it.
Here are the easy, simple instructions to crochet this four leaf clover. The basic idea is to create all four leaves and the stem, then sew them all together. |

Materials: Medium Weight Yarn Crochet Hook F (3.75 mm) Yarn Needle |

Crochet Pattern: Four Leaf Clover
Leaf (Make 4)
Row 1: ch 2, 2 sc in second ch from hook: 2 sc
Row 2: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next 2 sc: 4 sc
Row 3: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc: 6 sc
Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 6 sc
Row 5: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc: 8 sc
Row 6: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 8 sc
Row 7: ch 1, turn, skip 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in next sc, (dc, hdc, sc) in next sc, sl st in next sc, ch 1, skip 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in next sc, (dc, hdc, sc) in next sc, sl st in next sc, finish off
Stem
Row 1: ch 18, dc in third ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next 11 ch: 16 sts

Have you felted this clover? I want to make a felted purse for my daughter’s 4-H leader and thought I’d add this as an emblishment. It looks really easy to crochet, lucky for me as I just learned how to crochet, I’ve been a die-hard knitter for many years. Thanks for the great pattern.

dear rachel, i have trouble with joining all the pieces… could you help me, because… the joining seems bad… i mean the clover is not stiff…

when I joined mine I sewed the bottom corner of all the leaves together and a small part of the edges that are close to the center. The more of the edges you sew together the less flimsy your clover will be. But be sure to not sew too much of edges together or else the clove might look like a bowl. It also may be easier to sew one leaf on at a time.
Also, I used a pretty small hook to make the clover more stiff, if you used a bigger hook that might be why it’s not that stiff.

thank you so much for the st. patrick’s day pattern for me. I really appreciate. I read the directions and will take no time at all. I am also looking for Santa crochet hats. Of course any St. patrick’s day hats, there has been some with the tam, i like that, but most of them are missing the front piece like a baseball cap.

Thank you very much for this clover pattern. It was by far the easiest I’ve encounter and looks really great. I’ve made it with three and four leafs and either way it looks great. I also made your little Barbie Santa hat for my little christmas tree and I tell you everyone thought it was sooooo cute! Well, thanks again and I too can’t wait for the Irish tam hat pattern. this shamrock is beautiful!… the nicest I’ve seen!…. recently, a friend of a friend is having chemo and so she is wearing a hat now … I taught my friend to crochet, as she wanted to make a green hat for St Pat’s Day as a gift… she asked me to make a shamrock to attach ~ this is it!… bringing good luck and looking great!

Hi. I just finished one trial of this awesome shamrock. I’ve got all the petals and the stem made, but I’m not sure what to use to join them? A needle and the same yarn I crocheted with? Or something else? Thanks for you help.
Tracy, you can use a yarn needle and a strand of the same yarn you are crocheting with. With the yarn needle, sew the center together.

Hi Helene, after you crochet the 4 pieces and the stem you cans sew them together using the photo as a guide. If you want to add a magnet you can glue it to the back after you sew it together.

Fabric glue would probably work the best, but other glues would probably do the trick as well.
since st. Patrick’s day is coming up,i was lookinf for a clover pattern.ran across this one here on crochetspot.it was so easy,i just love it.gonna use them to make pins for family members to wear on the big day.Thanks so much for sharing it.
Hey rachel! My boyfriend is very irish and i want to make him a big blanket with the clover in the middle as a centerpiece for the blanket. how would you suggest on making the pattern bigger?! And do you think there is any way to put one of the smaller shamrocks inside the front of the hat and then place the front of the hat in a blanket?! lots of fun ideas 🙂
Hi Kathryn, you can try and crochet the shamrock with a larger crochet hook along with a thicker weight of yarn or more than one strand of yarn held together. I’m not sure what you mean by putting a hat on the blanket, but you can sew more than one shamrock on top of another or place it on anything you’d like.

I did 3 leaves in blue to look like the Girl Guide symbol for my stepdaughter’s camp. I also shortened the tail. The children trade them and sew them on as appliques. I got lazy because I was making tons of them, so I actually did them as one piece – crocheting down one side of each leaf.

Hi Rach– If you use heavy thread, eleminate the 2nd row of 6 & 8 sig.crochet, you get a smaller 4 leaf clover that can be used for a key chain lucky charm– all my kids (4) are getting one on St. Patricks day, Thenks, rose fabre (maw maw inc.)

Hi Rachel! I was wondering if I would be allowed to use this pattern for an event at a shop I work at for our social night. We had thought it would be fun to have a shamrock competitions with knitters and crocheters, by seeing who can make the most clovers in 3 hours. We were wanting to find a free crochet pattern for the crocheters and for the knitters.We were not going to make kits for this event, just the pattern and yarn for those who would be participating. Hi Victoria, a quick method for making it larger would be to use a much bigger hook and thicker yarn or more than 1 strand of yarn held together.
