I measured my head. 22 inches. According to this pattern that’d be a man’s hat. I have a smaller head than any man I know so I chose the women’s size anyway. I used worsted weight acrylic and a size i 5.5 hook as recommended. I made 5 rows and measured it at 2 3/4 inches as it said it should be. I finished the hat and it’s 26 inches around. It stays on my head alright if I wear a beanie under it, but it makes my head look like a sd chibi head or something. Sometime next week I’ll be making my husband a child size one, and if I ever redo mine I’ll make it toddler-size.
This pattern makes the shape of a tricorn, yes. For the sizing I guess you’re on your own.
Perhaps I should have just made a basic bucket hat and folded up the ends. =(

Hi Heidi, sorry to hear you had trouble with the pattern. Here are some tips that might help you out with your next hat…

After you crochet the beginning increases it should form a flat circle. For example, the beginning increases would be rounds 1 – 13 in the women’s pattern. Measure around this flat circle to make sure it matches the circumference of your head. Since tension can change while you crochet, you can adjust this circle to make sure it fits your head before going further.

Double check your stitch count at the end of each round. It’s really easy to accidentally add stitches, which can make the hat bigger than it’s intended to be.

Let me know if you end up having more problems and I can try and help you out.
