It can be hard to find a project for variegated yarns with short color repeats, so sometimes it’s best to think small and simple. A square scrubbie with a checkerboard pattern fits the bill quite nicely. This pattern requires some knowledge of Tunisian crochet. Be sure to use the chart linked below to brush up on abbreviations if you need it.

Skill Level:

Finished Size: 3 1/4″ (8.5 cm) wide, 3 1/2″ (9 cm) tall

Materials: Medium Weight Yarn (approximately 10 yards) Tunisian/Afghan Crochet Hook J (6.0 mm)

Gauge:
Rows 1 – 13 measure 3 1/4″ (8.5 cm) wide by 3 1/2″ (9 cm) tall

Crochet Pattern: Tunisian Check Scrubbie
Row 1: ch 13, pull up a loop in second ch from hook and in each ch across
Return Pass: (yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook) across: 12 TSS
Rows 2-5: tks in first 4 sts, tps in next 4 sts, tks in last 4 sts: 12 sts
Rows 6-9: tps in first 4 sts, tks in next 4 sts, tps in last 4 sts: 18 sts
Rows 10-13: Repeat rows 2-5
Finish off.
