Even More Granny Square Dresses…
By Rachel Choi – 35 CommentsIf you remember a while back I posted about the Granny Square Dress on the Red Carpet. That’s the crocheted dress on the right hand side. I though it was a neat and bold dress. But now here comes another! This one I’m not so crazy about. Although I wouldn’t wear either, I still like the one on the right more. The crochet granny square dress on the left is too baggy and loose for me. It’s like wearing a blanket. It might as well be a Snuggie. I’ll give it an A+ for trying to be creative and thinking outside the box, but honestly the design is not for me.
What do you think? Which one do you like better?
I agree I prefer Cate Blanchett’s dress the best, though I wouldn’t wear either.
I lke the brighter colored one for spring. and off the sholder is so sexy!

I prefer teh red carpet look as well. The one on the left actually looks like a blanket!!
I don’t think much of either one, but I’d go for the one with the smaller squares for the look of the fabric, and the other for the cut of the dress. To me, the one with the larger squares looks like someone stole all my mother’s chair seat covers and turned it into a dress. *L*
I think a granny square, knee length skirt would be cute for winter. But I am not crazy about either of these dresses. I am all for being creative, but this does make me think snuggie.
Personally I do not care for either one. They look like they are partially wrapped up in handmade blankets Granny square is either a blanket -pillow -hot or place mat or a pocket on a childs dress. Not for me!
I don’t love either, but if I had to pick I’d go for Cate’s. I agree with TehNoms, the other one looks like a granny-squared snuggie.
I like granny squares, but have never liked them in bold, multiple colors like this…….maybe using two colors, but that would be it for me. LOL
I think they’d look less blanket like in a solid color, and more fashionable that way.
Actually, I like the one on the left. I prefer the colours and the tiny squares. I like the loose fit (on the skinny model, wouldn’t want to know how it’ll look on me). I don’t like the frock off Cate’s dress, I’m not a fan of the model of the dress andnthe squares are huge. Does indeed seem like a seatcover or bedcover… :$
I think all this proves is that Cate is gorgeous enough to get away with wearing anything!! 🙂 But I like her dress (right) better b/c it has the finishing pieces – collar, cuff, fitted – that make it look more deliberate and less slouchy.
I think they should of left the blanket on the couch and not ruined it by wearing it 🙂 What was beautiful Cate thinking of when she decided to wear this dress, sure she’s wearing it in Melbourne (FYI the building in the backaground is Federation Square in the heart of Melbourne), which has a strong alternative fashion culture but I think this is a little too far.
I thought dress on right was a blanket thrown over one shoulder. My 18 yr. old daughter said it looked like her great Aunt’s couch afghan.

I agree with most of you – the dresses are a little out there. But, I think I kind of want the one on the left just so I could wear it around the house like a snuggie!! How cozy. (I just wouldn’t let anyone catch me wearing it!)
I like the one on the left better. Like the smaller squares and the black better than the larger light ones. I think if you added a chic wide belt to the one on the left, it would look much less like a blanket and more like a dress.
I like the one with the larger squares, more fitted looking, but I wouldn’t wear either of them…Now I have been trying to find a granny square poncho pattern. J-Lo wore it at the end of the movie The Cell. It was so cute, loose squares, not tight and heavy/hot. I’ve asked around but no one seems to know about it…
Actually I like them both! If I were to do one for myself I’d use the cotten yarn and maybe pastel colors (say cream, purple and green) for a spring/summer look , or 2 strong colors like forest,tan and brown for a fall/winter style. Viva la differance!
Wouldn’t wear either one. I think a dress should be made out of lustersheen or a two ply yarn. four ply doesn’t drape well even on these thin women.
They’re both “fugly”. I wouldn’t wear either. I agree with Cathy that Lustersheen or two-ply yarn is best for wearables.
Ew, terrible colors. I wouldn’t wear one of those if anyone payed me a billion dollars.
I agree with everyone (mostly)–these dresses are bugly, or fugly, or just plain ugly! The granny square has been done to death! It is past it’s prime by a long, long shot. Now, if someone offered me a billion dollars, or even a million, to wear it–I would, in a second, but since I don’t see that as ever happening…so, no, I wouldn’t wear it either.
Both of these granny squares are outdated and ugly. My cat has a better blanket in his cat bed. Do you really think that anyone will go out in public in either of these hideous, dated outfits. You can do better. I would not waste my time crocheting either of these ugly blankets.. there are many more projects worthy of our crocheting time. Didn’t anyone critique objectively and honestly these outfits?
While I am certainly in favor of freedom of speech and believing that one should be able to express their own opinions, I don’t agree with belittling or embarrassing someone because of their personal tastes. Please consider how you would feel if these comments were left for you….
To Sheri, I understand not wanting to hurt anyone’s feelings, but at the same time, I want to know what something looks like on me–I always ask my husband or daughter how I look and they know I really want to know. I don’t have a full-length mirror so their opinion matters tremendously and they know I want the truth–always! I never get angry or embarrassed by another person’s opinion. Of course, these dresses are so ugly, I wouldn’t need their opinion or a full-length mirror to know how bad it would look on. Just because a dress or outfit is ugly, it doesn’t mean the person wearing it is ugly. I love Cate Blanchett for her acting ability, not what she wears.

eventhough i would agree with most that granny square is outdated i love both dresses. they have a certain “funk” factor. i actually saw the dress on the left in a magazine full length, and it looks really cool with fishnet stockings and high heels. you really have to have a bold personality to match that outfit—I TOTALLY WOULD WEAR IT!
Black one looks like Nana’s blanket , the other doesn’t look so heavy , like the ruffle … to each his own once again … Wonder what Stacy London of What Not To Wear would say… Joan Rivers probably would faint …. Wonder what people say when I wear my purple pineapple crochet skirt (thread) behind my back … Thinking about rethinking the urinal thing …. presonal taste……
I like Paul Smith design and actually this particular picture isn’t the best. I would use different colors though. This design inspired me to make one for myself and I love it.
Well I like them. I like the one on the left better though. And you know what? I would wear one. Granny squares are for anything anybody wants them to be for. You’d wear a knitted or crocheted sweater or shirt wouldn’t you? Why not a dress?

Reminds me of the I love lucy show where Ricky has “designer” dresses made out of feed sacks just to see if Lucy would wear them. Yea, you can wear what you want but that doesn’t make them fashionable or even mean they’re good looking. I have seen lovely granny square dresses. They are more fitted, flattering, subtle colors, and smaller squares. By no means do they look like a blanket, AND THESE DO.
As much as I love granny squares, I don’t like either of them.
