Free Crochet Pattern: Chenille Mitten Gloves

By Claire Golden – 1 Comment

I’ve always loved mitten gloves (glittens)… normal fingerless gloves with a mitten top that flips on and off your fingers. Sometimes I get irritated with wearing regular gloves because it’s so clumsy to try to do anything. And if you’re wearing mittens, there’s basically no functionality. But fingers get cold in the winter, so what is a person supposed to do? Mitten gloves have been a lifesaver for me. Just flip off the mitten top if you need to send a text or find something in your purse, then flip it back on to warm up your fingers when you’re done.

I chose this chenille bulky yarn because it’s incredibly soft and warm. I highly recommend using it for the most luxurious mittens ever. But you could experiment with different bulky weight yarns to make your own dream pair of mittens. Let me know what you come up with!

Skill Level:

Finished Size: 7″ (17.5 cm) long, 6″ (15 cm) circumference. Fits a large child hand or small adult hand. It’s easy to modify to your size. Just increase the starting chain and number of rows.

Materials:
Bulky Weight Yarn (approximately 100 yards)
Approximately 2 yards of DK or worsted-weight yarn in matching color to sew gloves together (because chenille yarn snaps too easily)
Crochet Hook K (6.50 mm)
crochet yarn size 4

Gauge:
12 hdc = 4″
8 rows hdc in back loops only = 4″
Gauge Swatch: 4″w x 2″h (10 cm x 5 cm) ch 14.
Row 1: hdc in third ch from hook and in each ch across: 12 hdc
Row 2 – 8: ch 2, turn, hdc in back loops of first 11 hdc, hdc in both loops of last hdc: 12 hdc
Finish off.

Crochet Pattern: Chenille Mitten Gloves

Hand
Row 1: ch 22, hdc in third chain from hook and in each ch across: 20 hdc
Note: You can substitute row 1 with 20 foundation hdc if preferred.
Row 2-11: ch 2, turn, hdc in back loops of first 19 hdc, hdc in both loops of last hdc: 20 hdc
Joining: Ch 1, hold both ends together (the foundation chain and Row 11). Working through back loops of Row 11 and the spare chain loops from the foundation row, sl st 5 loosely. Sl st 5 in the hdc row only, skipping next 5 sts on foundation ch. Then sl st 10 through both layers. You are now at the bottom of the glove and can make the bottom edging. Do not finish off, continue with edging instructions.

Edging
Round 1: ch 1, make 16 sc evenly around edge, sl st to first sc: 16 sc
Round 2: ch 2, (fpdc around next sc, bpdc around next sc) 8 times, sl st in first fpdc: 16 dc
Round 3: ch 2, (fpdc around next fpdc, bpdc around next bpdc) 8 times, sl st in first fpdc: 16 dc
Finish off.

Thumb
Round 1: join to thumbhole at the bottom of the thumb (closest to your wrist when you’re wearing the glove), hdc in the 10 skipped stitches around, sl st in first hdc: 10 hdc
Round 2: ch 2, (hdc in next 3 sts, hdc2tog) 2 times, sl st in first hdc: 8 hdc
Round 3-5: ch 2, hdc in each hdc around, sl st in first hdc: 8 hdc
Finish off.

Mitten Top
Leaving an 18″ (46 cm) tail, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring, ch 2, 8 hdc in ring, sl st in first hdc: 8 hdc
Round 2: ch 2, make 2 hdc in each hdc around, sl st in first hdc: 16 hdc
Round 3: ch 2, (hdc in next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) 4 times, sl st in first hdc: 20 hdc
Round 4-9: ch 2, hdc in each hdc around, sl st in first hdc: 20 hdc
Note: If you wish to make the mitten top longer, add more repetitions of the last round. Keep in mind it will stretch to be a bit longer.
Round 10: ch 2, (hdc in next 4 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) 4 times, sl st in first hdc: 24 hdc
Round 11: ch 1, sc in each hdc around, sl st in first sc: 24 sc
Finish off.
Go back to where you left the starting tail. Pull up a loop of this tail in the beginning ch-4 ring, ch 4 and sl st into the other side of the ch-4 ring to form the buttonhole. Finish off.

Assembly
Weave in all ends. Use the thinner yarn to sew the mitten top to the top of the glove about 1″ (2.5 cm) down from the top. Sew a button to the ribbing of the glove.

These are adorable! I do a lot of crochet but have yet tackled a pair of adult mittens. I may have to give it a try!
