This pattern is very simple to alter if you desire to make bigger or small envelopes. The basic idea is to crochet a perfect square. Then fold the square into the shape of an envelope and embellish it as you desire. Just follow the instructions below to get started!

Skill Level: beginner crochet skill level

Finished Size: 4 ¼” (11 cm) wide, 4 ¼” (11 cm) tall when closed
Note: To change the finished size of your envelope, follow the instructions within the pattern.

  9. […] Crochet Envelope. I normally use this for Valentine’s Day, but it works great for many occasions, including Mother’s Day. Instead of putting your “I love you Mom” note in a regular, boring, paper envelope, how about crocheting an envelope? It is super easy and fast to do. You can even embellish the envelope as you desire (I like to use a heart). Here’s the pattern: Crochet Pattern: Envelope […]

Thank you for sharing this. It is so adorable, I am hosting a baby shower and part of my daughter-in-laws gift… my sister bought thank you cards, my other sister bought the stamps for the thank you cards. At the shower we will have each guest address one to themselves and we will pick one of the envelopes for a prize. I am going to make this to send the filled out thank you cards/envelopes.

We are doing a Skype shower from Pittsburgh, pa to Lancaster, CA. My daughter-in-law is expecting twins in March. 🙂 … I can’t wait to get started.

    Thanks again

My envelope is 11 inched from upper right to lower left so how many do you think I should chain
And would it come out square thanks

    • Rachel Choi says:

Hi Pat! You can chain as many chains as you need in order for the chains to measure 11″ long. Then repeat row 2 as many times as you need for it to be square.

  18. PAT says:

tried your pattern and did 30 chains and it keep out square but measuring my card diagonally this one is 9 inches doing rihgt now and do 40 stitches its crocheted right but its more of a rectangle than a square like an envelope should be do you have any suggestions or help please email me thanks wnat to do for a bday card

  19. PAT says:

I KNOW YOU CAN ADD MORE ROWS BUT DO NOT THINK YOU UNDERSTNAD IF YOUR CARD IS LIKE YOU SAY ABOVE IN YOUR DIRECTIONS MEASURE DIAGONALLY AND ITS 9 ONCHES
DIAGONALLY ITS MORE OF A RECTANGLE YOU CNAT FOLD A RECTANGLE INTO AN ENVELOPE LIKE YOURS ABOVE IF YA CAN PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF OR IF IM DOING SOMETHING WRONG WHICH I DONT THINK I AM THANKS

    • Rachel Choi says:

Yes, you are correct you cannot fold a rectangle into the envelop shape. So you would have to make it into a square shape. In order to make the square shape, you will have to either adjust the number of stitches or the number of rows. If it’s not the size you want, add more rows or stitches to get what you want.

If you aren’t sure what size you need, you can try and cut out a piece of paper to help you visualize it. Cut the paper into the square and fold it into the envelop shape to see if it is the size you want. Once you get the size you want, you can crochet a square that’s the exact size of your paper.

These are adorable! I’m going to make these for my daughter’s 1st grade class and fill them with chocolates, she can also put her Valentines in them and hand them out at the party. Think I may affix a heart shaped button so the envelopes can be buttoned shut. Thanks for sharing this!
