Free Crochet Pattern: Hip Pouch / Purse
By Rachel Choi – 43 CommentsFor the days when your pockets just aren’t big enough and you don’t feel like carrying around a giant purse, the hip pouch comes to the rescue! When I was a kid my mom always carried a hip pouch to put here stuff in because she hated purses. Since then I associated hip pouches with old people (no offense mom, and anyone else). Finally I come to the realization that I can create a hip pouch that isn’t just handy, but it is one that I would actually wear! This hip pouch can also be worn as a small purse if desired. So give this crochet pattern a shot! |
Skill Level: |
Finished Size: 6 ¼†(16 cm) wide, 5 ¼†(13 cm) tall not including belt
Note: size can be altered as you desire by following instructions within the pattern
Materials: Medium Weight Yarn (approximately 2oz / 95 yards) Crochet Hook H (5.00 mm) |
Gauge: not really important
Crochet Pattern: Pouch
Start by chaining 25 or a chain as long as the width of the pouch you desire.
Round 1: sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, sc in each ch on opposite side of foundation ch, place marker: 48 sc
Round 2: sc in each sc around: 48 sc
Repeat round 2 twenty two times or until pouch is as tall as you want it, then finish off. Note that the hip pouch in the photo uses self striping yarn, so feel free to change colors as you desire.
Closure Flap
Row 1: ch 2, 3 sc in second ch from hook: 3 sc
Row 2: ch 1 turn, 2 sc in each sc across: 6 sc
Row 3: ch 1, turn, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc) across: 9 sc
Row 4: ch 1, turn, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc) across:12 sc
Row 5: ch 1, turn, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc) across:15 sc
Row 6: ch 1, turn, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc) across:18 sc
Row 7: ch 1, turn, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc) across: 21 sc
Row 8: ch 1, turn, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc) across: 24 sc
Note: to increase the size of your closure flap, continue to increase the size of this semicircle.
Row 9: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, ch 3, skip 3 sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc: 27 sc
Note: If you altered the size of the closure flap, then you will have to alter row 9 as well by shifting the chain 3 to the center of the closure flap.
Row 10: ch 1, turn, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc) across, finish off: 30 sc
Note: if you altered the size of the closure flat, then you must change row 10 such that it increases the semicircle.
Button
Round 1: ch 2, 5 sc in second ch from hook: 5 sc
Round 2: 4 sc in same ch (overlapping previous round), finish off: 4 sc
Belt
Start by chaining 130 or a chain as long you want your belt.
Row 1: ch 3, dc in third ch from hook and in each ch across, finish off: 130 dc
Finishing:
Sew closure flat the top backside of the pouch. Sew button to the front side of the pouch, such that it is aligned with the hole in the closure flap. Sew the belt to the top backside of the pouch.
To wear the pouch, simply tie it around your hip. You can also sew on slip rings or a belt buckle if desired. This pouch can also be used as an over the shoulder purse by attaching the ends of the belt together and draping it over your shoulder.

thanks a lot for the pouch pattern…
Have you ever tried to sell your patterns to a crochet magazine? They would love your patterns.
Hey Peggy!
Thanks for the suggestion and compliment 🙂
I haven’t tried it, I wonder if there is a very long process for it. Maybe I’ll go look it up.
Oh cool , thanks for sharing, Im off now to make one 🙂
Thanks for the great pattern! I made the bag and it was quick and easy. I did make the belt too short. LOL So, I made belt loops on the back.
Thanks for always sharing your patterns!!
As always beautiful!
I’m also with your mom I hate purses. And I too associated hip pouches with old people. No offense.

I enjoyed looking at your pattern! I’ve thought about making a small purse-pouch but haven’t yet.
I’ve been carrying a passport pouch for years, though! It is such a handy size! I have fibromyalgia, and what with the “fibro-fog”, I kept leaving my purse at restaurants & such, so I told my DH one day that my guardian angel was tired of guarding my purse for me (since I left it so often – forgot I took one)! Since that time, I have carried a passport pouch instead, with bare essentials in it. I fasten it around my waist or put it in my pocket – fastened to my belt loop. That way it NEVER gets misplaced or lost or forgotten – even if it drops from my pocket (since it is fastened around my belt loop). I have had it fall out of my pocked, but although the cord is dangling and annoying when it drops (which is very rarely), since it is attached – I don’t lose it!
Glad you found it a handy size 🙂
Sure beats a bulky purse!
Sometimes I miss having room to put odd things in, but I never miss having forgotten it somewhere!

this is a crazy question – Ican chain stitch and double stitch in a straight line to make blankets and scarfs. How do you get the “round” shapre for the purse or a hat. I can’t seemto figure it out.
Thanks!
To get the round shape, you don’t turn at the end of each row. You either keep crocheting on the other side of the chain or keep crocheting in a circular fashion. Here is the How to Crochet a Beanie link if you would like to see a hat pattern and how the rounds are done.
Hey I didn’t get the cute little critter pattern named Cara. please send it to me.
Sherry
Hey Sherry, I just sent it!
Rachel
I love your website SOOOO much! Im 11 but love to crochet. i’ve already made 4 or 5 hats

Your things are so fun I made the hand warmers and round cloths,do you have any easy leg warmers? I would love these, thanks,Teresa
Hey Teresa, I don’t have any leg warmers, but you can use the wrist warmer crochet pattern, and adjust them to make them longer and wider.
You don’t mind to sending your pattern on the purse to my e-mail address. I stop used the purse that Ladies carry after I got robbed second time. I miss my beautiful lather billfold with art works of horses. Thanks.
Hi Carlatta, you can print the pattern out if you like. Just use the print feature in your internet browser.
Rachel, can this pattern be made out of cotton yarn?
Sure can Faith. The pouch in the picture actually uses cotton yarn 🙂
another question Rachel what if I don’t want to use it as a hip pouch and want to use it as a purse. Making this for my oldest daughter for her birthday
You can just sew the strap on differently. Instead of sewing it behind the pouch as instructed, sew one end of the strap to one side of the purse and the other end of the strap to the opposite side. You can also adjust the strap to make it longer or short as you see fit by making a chain as long as you want your strap to be.
Ok thanks Rachel I will do that
Rachel I am yet again lost now when you say finish off how are we suppose to do the closure flap? Sorry for a dumb question
Faith, the closure flap is made seperately then sewed onto the pouch when you are done. Here is a post about how to finish off: Finish Off and Weave in Ends in Crochet
Ok thanks I was confused there thanks for the explanation
Ok, thanks, Rachel. I have been working on afghan which I just finished last wk Thur – Fri. I’m working on another one.
I just check your Home page. Oh wow, soap savers, that will be great for ladies that have diabetic. I need to do this one for Mother Kathleen. How can I get this pattern & is it free?
Have a good crocheting fun.
Hi Carlotta, the soap savers are free only if you are a monthly Premium Pattern Member, you can learn more about membership here: http://www.crochetspot.com/premium-pattern-membership/
If you aren’t a member, then you can still purchase the pattern in the store here: http://www.crochetspot.com/store/
Hi Rachel,
How do you keep the body of the pouch from twisting? Similar patterns do the same twist and do not lay flat. A photo of the back of the pouch would help when assembling the flap and strap. I’ve now exhausted the number of friends to give the lanyard to and am on a coaster kick. My grandaughter loves coasters.

Hi Fleurdelis, try blocking your crochet when you’re done. Here’s some info about blocking http://www.crochetspot.com/blocking-crochet/
By sew, you mean on a machine, or by hand with a yarn needle? If by hand, what stitch type? and using thread or yarn? thanks
Hi Jane, sew the purse by hand with a yarn needle and the same yarn you used to crochet it. This way it will blend in with your work. You can whip stitch it together, here’s a tutorial on that: How to Whip Stitch in Crochet
this is my new fav. site. hey there I used your pattern to make a a bigger bag/hippie type bag without the flap though. the problem now is on how I make the bag,do I make it separate or crochet it to the bag? I’m so confused it’s really not clear to me. if you ca pliz help me there,thankx…..
Hi Ladyjah, I’m not sure I understand your questions. Are you having trouble with the bag or making something to add to the bag? Please clarify so that I can help you better.
hey Rachel.I’ve never made anything that’s not a hat before,I was having trouble understanding if I have to make the flap and the belt separate from the bag and then saw it on.but I think I got it now,I must make them separate no?
Yes, make them separate. Then you can sew them on. Here’s a tutorial for sewing if you need it: How to Whip Stitch in Crochet
thankx Rachel I’ll do that..
Sorry, Rachel, I change my mind, & not printing the little purse.
Hi
I am new to crocheting. I am a bit confused as to how to get to 48 single crochet, if I am starting with 25. Do I work in the front and back of the stitch at the same time.
Please help! I would like to crochet this purse,
Regards
Sandi
Hi Sandi, on row 1 after you do the “sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across” you’ll have a total of 24 single crochets. Then after you “sc in each ch on opposite side of foundation ch” you’ll make another 24 single crochets, for a total of 48 single crochets. Here’s tutorial a tutorial that might help you visualize how to crochet on the opposite side: How to Crochet on Opposite Side of Foundation Chain
great work, will do this, nice and simple
Rachel,
Great idea. I am going to make one of these soon. I think I’ll sew the strap on in a way that I can tie it in front.
Thanks for patiently helping those with questions. You’re great.
Lora
I wonder when you say sc in each chain opposite side of foundation chain, do you mean in the back of the stitch?
Hi Maureen, here’s a tutorial for crocheting on the opposite side: How to Crochet on Opposite Side of Chain
Hi Rachel,
I just found my hip purse that I made 6 years ago. I needed something to carry my phone, a few tissues, eye glasses and my medications around the house. I am getting ready to make a new one in kitchen cotton. And to think I almost gave it away!
Thanks to all of you for sharing your creative ideas.
