Free Crochet Pattern: Mason Jar Crochet Hook Holder

If you have an extra mason jar laying around the house, you can use it to store your crochet hooks! Crochet this simple top to place on a mason jar and you have an instant storage solution. You can also use the holder for pencils and pens. Use a mason jar with a 2 1/2″ opening at the top. I’ve found that there are different sized jars that have the same size opening, so I close to use one of my shorter jars so the tops of the crochet hooks can stick out easier.

Finished Size: 3″ (7.5 cm) diameter, fits snugly over a mason jar with a 2 1/2″ (6.5 cm) opening.

Materials: Medium Weight Yarn (approximately 20 yards) Crochet Hook K (6.50 mm) Stitch marker (or safety pin or scrap of contrasting yarn) |

Gauge: Rounds 1 – 3 in pattern measure 2 1/2″ in diameter

Crochet Pattern: Hook Holder
Round 1: ch 5, sl st in fifth ch from hook forming a ring, place marker: 5 ch
Round 2: (ch 1, dc) 6 times in ring: 6 ch-1 spaces, 6 dc
Round 3: (ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in each ch-1 space around: 12 ch-1 spaces, 12 dc
Round 4: 3 sc in each ch-1 space around: 36 sc
Round 5: working in back loops only, (dc2tog, dc in next sc) around: 24 dc
Round 6: sc in each dc around, sl st in first sc, finish off: 24 sc
Fill bottom of mason jar with scraps of yarn, rocks, tissue paper, beads, or any other items to obtain the correct height for the crochet hooks.

I agree with Cami; yes this is very cool! And also with Collette Griffith: either my hooks roll off the table or I put them down and then can’t find them! Even when I’m laying in my bed crocheting, I lay the hook down for a minute, then poof! I have to move everything around to find it! This will be perfect for me, I’m looking for a mason jar now!

I just moved from Texas to Indiana. As I was picking up limbs to mow, I ran across a “flat” of pint mason jars. Picking them up, only 8 were usable so I’ve cleaned them up and can’t wait to start working on these little gems. Gifts for other “crafty” ladies.

I actually have a mason jar – left over from a gift of cut flowers. It’s all washed and sitting on my kitchen counter – and now there is a reason for its use again!

Ok, maybe I am still just a novice (I am), but for round 2, do you put the 6dc in one chain, or all around?
Hi Ashley! All of the dc will be made into the one ring, which you made on round 1.
This is really cute and functional. I use the ergo crochet hooks, because of the rubber handles I will make this with a ribbon material so the hooks can slide in/out easier without catching on the yarn and the jar possibly falling to the floor and breaking, and then attach the yarn once I start the sides to go over the jar. Thanks so much for sharing the pattern and directions. The idea’s can be endless with what you can use for even a larger hook holder!
This is so awesome! I do use the crochet hooks with the rubber on them but I just finished making the 20th one. Lol I’m making them for my mother in law as she teaches art and she is going to give them to her students for a Christmas gifts and these would be great for pens and pencils too. I did change the pattern a little by adding a row at the end with chain3 add a bead chain 3 skip 2 stitches single crochet chain 3 add a bead chain 3 skip 2 stitches and continue to the end. I have pictures of them but not able to add to this post. Thank you again for sharing your pattern!!!
