Free Crochet Pattern: Stars & Stripes Pennant Bunting

I love a chance to decorate. Frankly, I’m not sure what I like more, celebrating the holiday or the opportunity to decorate! With Independence Day coming up it’s time to get out the Red, White, and Blue, am I right?
If you’re a handmade fanatic like me then the Stars & Stripes Pennant Bunting is the perfect choice! It’s a quick pattern to work, taking only a few hours, and pretty easy, even for beginners with only just budding skill.
However, the biggest beauty of this pattern is how customizable the length is. The instructions for the strand are written so that you can make your bunting as short or as long as you like. I personally like just enough length to casually drape across our narrow door frames, and that is what you’ll get if you follow the pattern straight through. But if you decide you want more length, all you have to do is crochet a few more flags and continue with the strand and assembly instructions as before.

Gauge:
7 sc = 2’’
8 rows = 2’’
Gauge Swatch: 2’’w x 2’’h (5 cm x 5 cm) ch 8.
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 7 sc
Row 2 – 8: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 7 sc
Finish off.

Note: For a longer strand, work more flags than suggested, being sure to have an equal number of both. And remember, when lining up flags for bunting, always start with the blue flag.
Crochet Pattern: Stars & Stripes Pennant Bunting
Blue Flag (make 3)
Row 1: with blue, ch 17, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 16 sc
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each sc across until 2 sc remain, sc2tog: 14 sc
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 14 sc
Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each sc across until 2 sc remain, sc2tog: 12 sc
Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 12 sc
Row 6: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each sc across until 2 sc remain, sc2tog: 10 sc
Row 7: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 10 sc
Row 8: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each sc across until 2 sc remain, sc2tog: 8 sc
Row 9: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 8 sc
Row 10: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each sc across until 2 sc remain, sc2tog: 6 sc
Row 11: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 6 sc
Row 12: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each sc across until 2 sc remain, sc2tog: 4 sc
Row 13: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 4 sc
Row 14: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each sc across until 2 sc remain, sc2tog: 2 sc
Row 15: ch 1, turn, sc2tog: 1 sc
Finish off.
Star (make 3)
Round 1: with white, ch 3, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 1, 5 sc in ring, sl st in first sc: 5 sc
Round 2: (ch 4, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in last ch, sl st in next sc) 5 times: 5 points
Finish off. Sew one star to each blue flag.
Striped Flag (make 3)
Repeat instructions for Blue Flag, but begin with red yarn and change colors every row, so that all odd rows will be red and all even rows will be white. Be sure to carry the yarn so that you will not have a lot of tails to work in later.
Bunting Strand
Assemble flags in order (blue, striped, etc). With white yarn, chain 30. Picking up flags in reverse order, take the first flag and sl st along back loops only of the top row and work across. When finished with flag, ch 3, and then pick up the next flag and repeat. Do the same with all the flags. Once all flags are connected, ch 30 and finish off. Leave tails or work them in.
