Finished Size: 3″ (7.5 cm) diameter
To change the size of the stars, try using a smaller or bigger hook with different weights of yarn

Materials: Medium Weight Yarn (small amount) Crochet Hook I (5.50 mm) |

Crochet Pattern: Star
Round 1: ch 3, 10 hdc in third ch from hook, sl st in top of beg ch: 10 hdc
Round 2: (ch 5, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, skip 1 hdc, sl st in next hdc) 5 times, finish off

Hey Missy, for a bigger star try using a larger hook than suggested in the pattern or a bulky weight of yarn or a couple strands of yarn held together!

The center of the star is made in half double crochets (hdc) so after making one of the points on the star you are going to skip 1 half double crochet and slip stitch in the next half double crochet.
I want to enlarge the star you show here. I think I can do it but I’m not sure. I completed a Texas flag for my son and need to make a white star approx 8″ across. I have been looking for a pentagram or five sides pattern and I think I can adapt the points. Any suggestions? I am having a heck of a time finding a 5 sided potholder. Thanks.
Try using a larger hook with more than one strand of yarn held together.
I see that its been asked for above, but say, I wanted to make a really really really big version of one of these. Something along the lines of 12″ across, any advice on how i could do that?
To make the star 12″ would be a totally different pattern. But you would have to make the center circle larger, then extend each of the points by making a longer chain for each of them.
I have been fighting with following the instructions on making stars to sew to a little stuffed fairy’s hat and for it’s magic wand for hours and hours. It made no sense whatsoever, and when I finally did figure it out, the star’s points weren’t all that pointed. Then, I remembered that you had done a star pattern, and, voila!…they will be exactly the correct size for my little fairy!….AND they look a heck of a lot better than the ones pictured from the goofy pattern I was struggling with! ….AND a heck of a lot easier to make! THANK YOU!
Hey Rachel! I just wanted to thank you for this pattern. I spent probably half an hour or so looking for star patterns online and even tried out a couple that were, for me at least, pretty complicated. I was about to just give up and check your site when I clicked on a link that brought me right to this pattern. 🙂 This pattern is so simple but they look amazing. I’m using cotton thread in Christmas colors.

I’m having a little trouble with the last part of the round 1, I did the 10hdc in third from hook and sl st in top of beg ch. The part I’m having trouble with is the :10 hdc, before you start round 2. Is all done in the beg ch? or where?
Hi Jami, the :10 hdc is just the total stitch count for the row. It tells you how many stitches you have on that row, you don’t have to do it again. Here is a post about reading crochet patterns if you need it: How to Read Crochet Patterns
Thanks Rachel, I figured that out shortly after I had posted that last comment. My next question is I’ve been trying to figure out how to enclose the star. I’m making a flag blanket, and can’t quite figure out how to do it. Could you help, please?
Jami, I’m not sure what you mean by enclosing the star. But you can sew your star onto your finished blanket.
I know kind of hard to explain, but I wanted to (i guess) make them in to squares or square the stars so you can see them on both sides of the blanket rather than just having them on one side. Thanks though

I read your post on how to read a pattern but i’m still confused on where to put the 10 hdc. do I put all 10 hdc in the bottom stitch then join into a circle?
Hi Sarah, yes you’re going to put all 10 hdc into the third chain from your hook (the third chain is also the first chain that you made).

Hi Tania, you can use the “magic ring” technique, here’s a tutorial on that: How to Crochet: The Magic Adjustable Ring
Personally, instead of using the magic ring I like to just crochet over the tail/end of the yarn when I make the 10 hdc into the chain. Then pull the tail so that it tightens the center, which prevents the hole from showing.

These are very cute, and will make a perfect mobile for my friend’s new baby…however, I am a new crocheter and I am confusing myself..I will attempt to explain. 🙂
Anyways, so, I chain three…then to hdc, per the book I am looking at, I chain two more (so now I have a chain of five, but I kept track of where I started the hdc) and I insert my hook into the 3rd hook from the hook…which would be the 3rd loop in my chain of 5…which leaves me a little tail…and I don’t think that is right. Am I supposed to put the hook into the 3rd loop from where my stitch started (that would be the very first chain) or where I put it?

Hi Lothea, round 1 states “ch 3, 10 hdc in third ch from hook, sl st in top of beg ch”
So for this pattern you are going to chain 3, then make 10 hdc into the third chain from your hook (the third chain from your hook is also the first chain you made). Once you have all 10 hdc into that one chain, it’ll start to look like a small circle. To join the beginning of the circle to the end, you’re going to make a slip stitch into the to of the beginning chain. The beginning chain is the ch 3 that you made at the beginning of the round. The top of the chain is the third chain you made.
The instructions in the book you are referring to don’t really apply for this pattern. Let me know if you need more help.

But in round 2, instead of “skip 1 hdc, sl st in next hdc” don’t you mean “skip 1 sc, sl st in next sc”?
Hi Sharron, in round 2, the hdc’s are refering the hdc on round 1. So you would be skipping 1 hdc on round 1, then making the slip stitch into the next hdc.
Thanks — I started this pattern after working on one that had 10scs for the base round, and I was still thinking in those terms. Your pattern turns out much better than the one I was using!

This is fabulous! I was using another star pattern that, while nice, was a bit rounded and not as much a “true” star shape. I LOVE this! I knocked out my first star in about 5 minutes…lol! The instructions are very clear and the result is charming. Very pleased! Thank you! I’m making a mess of patriotic stars for my stove and ‘fridge!
…that is to say, I’m putting some self adhesive magnet striping (cut to size) and making magnets out of the stars.

Hello! You would probably need to use a completely different pattern to make this star into blanket size. Try doing a search for a star shaped blanket.

Is it possible to “translate” the pattern? I can surmise “ch” means chain, but I have not idea what “hdc” and “sl st in top of beg ch” means, much less “dc in next ch, skip 1 hdc, sl st in next hdc”… I can only guess that professional crocheters would certainly know what that means; however, professional crocheters would not be looking for patterns online, would they?
