How to Crochet a Cube

A crochet cube can be used for many projects. You can make baby blocks, dice, tissue box covers or gift boxes. The ideas are limitless. Crocheting a cube can be done using multiple methods. You can either crochet all 6 sides of the cube separately then sew them together, or you can crochet your cube in the round. This tutorial explores crocheting your cube without sewing pieces together, thus crocheting in the round. crochet cube

The basic idea is to start by creating a square and then make it three dimensional by crocheting around it with out increasing the amount of stitches in each round. To make the bottom of the cube, each round is slowly decreased to close the bottom. To make different sized cubes, just make the initial square the size that you want it.

Crochet Pattern: Cube
Note: stitches are crocheted in the back loop only unless otherwise indicated.

Thanks for posting this. Ever since I discovered amigurumi, I’ve been crocheting in the round a lot and this method of making a cube is a lot quicker and seamless than crocheting 4 squares and stitching them together. I’m going to make companion cubes from the game Portal using this method.

I wanted to make a baby robot… big cube head, cube body and four little cube dangles for hands and feet…. so this is JUST what i needed!

I don’t get how to get a cube out of that pattern – I can only make circles :-S

    • Rachel says:

Hi Inge, Rounds 1 – 8 will make a flat square. Then rounds 9 – 23 will make the sides of the cube. Then rounds 24 – 31 will close the cube making the last square in the cube. Try it out and let me know which round you get stuck on.

My friend collects odds and ends and keeps them in weird containers. I have already made her a circle basket, and i want to make her a square one. I’ve made the bottom and body but how do i make the top look square too?

  8. Nicole says:

How would you elongate this in to a rectangular box?

    • Rachel says:

Hi Nicole, you can start with a long chain, where the length would depend on how long you want your box. You’ll crochet around the chain, and put the “3 sc” in each corner, while placing 1 sc in all the other stitches. If you’re a Premium Pattern Member, you can download the Box of Chocolates Crochet Pattern where there’s a pattern for a rectangle box.

I am endeavouring to make a cover for my cube poof, I have made the top round how can I now turn this into a cube, is it possible?
    Thanks ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Rachel Choi says:

      Hi Penny!
You can make 6 of the tops and sew them together when you are done. Or you can continue to lengthen the one top until is covers your poof. You would sc in each sc around, so that there are the same number of stitches on each round. Then you can make the bottom by substituting the increases (3 sc in each of the corners) with a decrease instead (sc3tog).

Thanks for the post! What’s the size for this pattern?
    And what does “yo” mean?

    • Rachel Choi says:

      Hi Elena!
The size is adjustable, so you can make the cube as big or small as you desire. It will also change according to the hook and yarn you use. Mine came out to be about 4″ wide.
“yo” is the abbreviation for “yarn over”

  11. Kiara says:

Hi, what are the dimensions of this cube?

    • Rachel Choi says:

Hello! The cube is about a 4″ square. But it really depends on what yarn and hook size you choose to use, and you gauge. This is more of a tutorial so that you can crochet the cube and adjust the size as you need!

Here I am years after your original online publication of instructions on how to crochet a cube and I-am-delighted! Hope this works for me, as I’m going to create a cubist’s paradise necklace, once I master your technique, find just the right yarn with metallic threads running through, find beads, and on and on. This has been percolating in my brain for a while, so am happy to have found your site. Thanks so much!

  13. Molly says:

    Hi!

Thanks for sharing these instructions, they have been quite helpful! However, as I’m stuffing my cube, it’s rounding out and loosing its flat sides. Any advice on how to maintain a real cube shape without loosing its defined sides? Thanks!

  14. Dave says:

I’ve just got hold of an off-cut of memory foam. I’m thinking that when cut to the right shape, it should be perfect to use as stuffing and ensure that the cube keeps its nice shape ๐Ÿ™‚
