How to Crochet: Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc)
By Rachel Choi – 13 CommentsBack post double crochet is very similar to front post double crochet. The only different is the way you insert your hook. If you already know how to do front post double crochet, then this going to be a piece of cake! If you don’t already know how, then visit the “How to Crochet: Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)” before attempting this tutorial.
Here is what you do:
Yarn over just like you will do if you were making a double crochet
Insert your hook through the back of your work, across the front of the indicated stitch, then through your work again, such that the hook is at the back of your work again. It will look like this from the front:
Now finish your double crochet as you normally would: yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on your hook, yarn over, pull through the final 2 loops on your hook.
Still need help? Let me know!
so the front post is the side that is facing me?
yup, the front is the side that faces you when you crochet.
More( QUESTIONS)!!!! Is a popcorn and beg pop the same thing. and how do you make the stitch.
I have only just joined this site and I absolutely LOVE the “How To” bits. They are so very easy to follow. Thank you so very veyr much
I’m having SO much trouble with front and back post stitching! Are you going in front of or behind the entire “post”? Are you pushing in through the middle of the post and going in from the front or the back? I tried making the basket weave washcloth which uses these stitches and it looked nothing like the picture even though I felt I understood the stitches.
[…] is difficult, but as soon as you master these two techniques: Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) and Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc), cabling will be part of your everyday crocheting […]

I am looking at your picture of back post crochet, but cannot tell where the hook is going in and coming out. Front post seems very clear, but this back post is a mystery.
Thanks
Hi Marcy, I’m glad you’re able to see the front post clearly. For the back post, the hook goes in and out the same places the front post does, the difference is that it’s on the back side instead. So for the back post, you can pretend you’re doing the front post, but insert your hook from the back of the work instead of the front.
Hi Rachel,
I just made a hat that has an alternating pattern of double stitch and back post double stitch. It’s a great hat, but the transition from the ds to the bpds is really noticible. Do you know of any way to blend that transition between stitches so the “seam” isn’t so noticable?
Thanks!
Heather
Hi Heather, I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. But when you alternate bpdc and dc stitches you are suppose to have a textured look where the bpdc is raised compared to the dc.
Working on a throw using dc with ripples. Calls for bpdc at top of ripple but am confused to do bpdc in dc just completed.
Help,
Carol
Hi Carol, to do a bpdc in the dc just completed, it’s like working a regular bpdc (as shown in this tutorial) just that you’ll be making it in the double crochet stitch you just made. This means you’ll have to move your hook to work around the stitch you just made instead of the next stitch in the row.
