How to Crochet: Mini Motifs – Part One

By Erin Burger – 4 Comments
A motif is defined as a distinctive and recurring form, shape, figure, etc., in a design, as in a painting or on wallpaper. Granny squares are a great example of a motif. The mini motifs featured in these posts can be used for so many fun crochet projects. Make a cool garland with many mini-motifs strung together, design your own jewelry (earrings!), decorate a child’s room, make a table runner; the possibilities are practically endless!

This little motif is simple and reminds me of a little jewel. The pictured motifs are a smaller motif made with an E hook and fingering weight yarn and a larger one made with a G hook and sport weight yarn.

Round 1: ch 8, sl st in first ch made to form ring: 8 ch
Round 2: ch 3, 23 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 23 dc
Round 3: sl sl in first three dc, ch 3, sl st in same st, (sl st in next 3 dc, ch 3, sl st in same st) around, ending with a sl st in first sl st, ch 3, sl st in same st: 8 ch-3s

Finish off, weave in any ends. Make it pretty.

So what are the differences in weight of the yarn you use (for any projects really) and why are they important?

I’ve tried looking it up but I don’t find much help for it.

some are soft weight and some are sport weight and some are really course a 4 ply soft weight project would probably come out smaller than a 4 ply heavier weight yarn and it is important if you are making a sweater for example to use type of yarn it calls for to get correct size – gage of project you are working on that is what i experianced with different types and weights of yarns

Can someone please just explain this to me without the abbreviations and everything? I know how to crochet a little bit, but I tried this and I don’t understand and it just ends up sucking and not working.
