How to Crochet: Offset Fish Net Stitch
By Robin Beers – 11 CommentsThis lacy stitch is a open crochet stitch like a fish net with slanted rows. It looks more complicated than it really is – simply rows of triple crochet (also known as treble crochet). For a refresher on that stitch, see the triple crochet tutorial. Use this stitch to make an interesting scarf or a pretty table runner. I use cotton yarn in a light weight (3) in this tutorial, but you can use worsted weight yarn or any weight in between if you like. With these fancy stitches, the thinner yarn shows up the most detail. |
Start with a row of single crochet in an even number. Add 3 for the foundation row.
Note: If you are left handed, just put your mouse over the photo for a left-handed view.
Row 1: Triple Crochet in the 5th chain from the hook.
Chain 1.
Skip 1 chain and make 1 tr in the next chain. Repeat across the entire row.
Row 2: Chain 4.
Skip first tr and make tr in next chain space.
Chain 1.
Skip next tr and make tr in next chain space. Continue in this pattern across entire row.
End the row with a tr in the 1st chain of the chain 4 from the previous row.
Repeat row 2 until you have made the desired amount of rows. Make sure that you have the same amount of tr in each row as you progress.

Hey, I do this all the time. Nice yarn btw.
This gives me the idea of using up bits of yarn, in making a bag for groc. Thanks.
You’re welcome!
Thanks for sharing, I’m going to try this sometime.
Though not a big fan of the treble crochet stitch, this pattern will be used for a lightweight/Spring scarf for a friend. And yes, light cotton will be perfect. Thanks for sharing.
I am very excited about this stitch. I’ve started working it in rounds for a reusable produce bag. Thanks for the tutorial!
At my school we are makeing water bottle holders for people going through kiomo therapy. Thank you for this tutorial, it made the job much faster and easier!
This fishnet pattern will make a great pair of fishnet fingerless gloves.Very nice tutorial on this stitch. thank you
What size hook do you use with light weight (3) yarn ?
Benbel, it would depend on the tension you are trying to achieve in your work. But for a rule of thumb, here’s a table in this post that might help you decide what to use: Types of Yarn and Recommended Crochet Hooks and Gauges
These days, the yarn label will often tell you what hook size it recommends using as well. If you’re using a pattern, it should suggest a hook size too.
Thank you, Rachel. This is great info.
