When you think of buying a crochet book, most people are looking for a variety of patterns. Design Your Own Crochet Projects by Sara Delaney has a different approach. While still providing a variety of crochet patterns, it gives you the details on how each pattern is designed and sized. I wish there was a book like this years ago when I started designing my own crochet patterns. It gives you the insight into how the author develops her patterns so that you can extrapolate what you want to make your own.

When I bought a skein of deliciously soft fall-themed yarn, I knew I had to use it–even if it was still feeling more like summer than autumn. With that in mind, I decided to go for something open and airy that I could later bunch up for warmth when the weather turns. So I decided to turn to letters that come in toward the end of the alphabet– Y, X, and V–to create a pattern that fit my needs. The pattern is easily changed if you like a wider or longer scarf.

In the winter, chunky and bulky yarns are my favorite to crochet with. I love the feel of the material as I crochet as well as how they wear or look when finished.
Another thing I find indispensable in the winter are earwarmers. My ears always freeze, so if I am not already wearing a hat, I must have earwarmers with me at all times. This pair of earwarmers is the perfect choice with it’s chunky yarn, basketweave stitch, and wooden buttons.
Make the earwarmers in four rows of basketweave material and then single crochet around for a finished piece. Buttons add just the right touch, and you don’t have to worry about buttonholes because the fabric creates them naturally.
Here’s to warm ears this coming winter!

This pattern was requested by several Crochet Spot readers!
If you’ve crocheted any of the crochet patterns in the “cozy” series, here is a hat to match! The Cozy Shawl Wrap with Pockets, Cozy Key Hole Scarf, Cozy Asymmetrical Poncho, and Cozy Hooded Poncho all use the same “cozy” stitch pattern. The cozy hat is designed using the same stitch to match these patterns. It is crocheted in the round, from the top down. Whether or not you are crocheting the hat to match another item, you can crochet this hat in any of the 5 sizes that are included: baby, toddler, child, adult, and large adult.

Why would someone ever want to stop buying yarn? Perhaps you’re on a tight budget or you already have an entire closet or room full of yarn you haven’t used yet. While this post’s title might seem ridiculous to some, I know there are a bunch of yarnaholics out there that might need a little (okay, more like a lot) of help taming their buying impulses.

Wear it as a shrug or a scarf, this convertible accessory does double duty! Starting at the end of one sleeve, working across the back and ending at the other sleeve, this shrug is constructed and shaped with no sewing required. The stitch pattern is a classic mesh that’s light to wear and drapes well. The pattern includes instructions for adjusting the size to fit anyone, no matter if you’re an extra small or plus size. You can also make the sleeves short or long, you’re choice!
