I adore pop culture and movie buzz. How about you? It can be fun to host an Oscar or Golden Globes party and why shouldn’t crochet be a part of that? I wrote about “Red Carpet Ready” Crochet in 2014 and since the peak of the awards season is upon us, let’s take our inspiration from the stars and crochet some fun!

One of the hot crochet-related items on many crocheters Christmas list this year was a spindle for hand-spinning yarn. Spindles come in a plethora of types, styles, and models. Many are a mini-art pieces, with beautiful woodwork, designs, and colors. Hand spinning yarn, for me, has become a sister addiction to my out-of-hand crochet addiction! This is the first post in a series that plans to explore hand spindles from around the world. I’m so excited to be writing about a new passion of mine- hand spinning yarn!

Winter is a wonderful season… as long as you’re warm. This capelet is just what you need to crochet and wear to keep your upper torso warm this season. The capelet looks great whether dressed up or down. The capelet is my favorite accessory when wearing dresses in the winter, especially if the dress has short or no sleeves. You can even crochet it in white and wear it with a winter wedding dress! The capelet is designed with beginner crocheters in mind. Bulky weight yarn and a large crochet hook makes this project relatively quick to crochet and creates a thick, warm fabric. This pattern has 9 sizes, ranging from women’s X-Small to a plus size 5X. Feel free to make the capelet as long or short as you desire.

Have you seen the trend of knitting projects with dropped stitches that are later picked up into a braid? Of course, crochet stitches don’t drop, so there needs to be a workaround. Using long chains, crocheters can achieve the same look. If you’re familiar with long chains such as those used in the Knot Stitch (Also known as the Lover’s Knot or Solomon’s Knot), You’re already ahead of the game.

If you have been following crochet online (and something tells me if you’re reading this you probably do), you may have noticed an uptick in the prevalence of crocheting mandalas. I think there are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, Kathryn Vercillo of Crochet Concupiscence began a project called Mandalas for Marinke in memory of crochet designer Marinke “Wink” Slump. If you’re interested in reading about the project, you should check out this link or the article in Interweave Crochet, Fall 2015 about it.

Today we’ll look at crocheting mandalas as a moving meditation like walking a labyrinth.

Do you love the look of knitting but don’t have the desire to pick up the needles? Tunisian Crochet offers many gorgeous stitches that have a similar look to knitting, but what if you don’t want to dip into the Tunisian waters yet? Here comes the Camel Stitch, a crochet stitch that looks remarkably like knitting.

Here are three of my favorite blanket stitches that create a solid fabric without large holes and can be crocheted using just one color. Solid colored blankets are great if you aren’t in the mood to change yarn colors every row, but feel free to crochet the blankets in multiple colors if you prefer. The solid fabric is great for babies and also great if you want a warmer blanket without the holes. This set includes the bubble, shell, and chevron stitch blanket patterns. Each pattern has a unique border to give each blanket a finished look. The patterns include instructions for making the blankets any size you wish, from small baby blankets to large bedspreads to any size in between.
