As the year draws to a close, some people are already experiencing winter’s chill and seeing snow ranging from flurries to full-on ground-covering falls. Whether you associate snow with warm pajamas and hot chocolate or with shoveling and traffic delays, there’s one thing you’ll be hard-pressed to deny: the beauty of the snowflake. crochet_spoked_snowflake

Win Free Yarn from A Hundred Ravens

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – November 24th, 2015 Be the first to comment

Yes! I said free yarn! Remember when I reviewed Aesir yarn by indie dyer A Hundred Ravens? Well, I am delighted to announce that the company has generously offered to sponsor our Finish in ’15 contest with a prize! While figuring out what to offer, Kate Bachus, the owner of A Hundred Ravens asked if I thought we would like a mini-set! I said yes because crocheters love colorwork. Am I right?

Crochet Pattern: Classic Balaclava (4 Sizes)

By Rachel Choi – November 22nd, 2015 Be the first to comment
Crochet a balaclava for the winter weather. Use it as a ski mask while skiing, snowboarding, or tubing. Wear it during cold winter hikes or any other outdoor activity. The pattern is designed so that it can easily be crocheted in different colors to create your own stripe design, or in a solid color for a traditional look. Crocheted from the top down, in the round, the balaclava is easy to crochet. The pattern includes 4 sizes ranging from small children to large adults.

How to Make Scratchy Acrylic Yarn Soft and Lovable

By A Guest Writer – November 20th, 2015 36 Comments

A Guest Post by Molly Ferriter.
(Tips from a Crochet-Obsessed Mommy)

Okay, I’ll admit it… I used to be a yarn snob. I’m serious; I was a real Crochet Princess. I used to shun the Walmart yarn section like the black plague. I mean, who wants that scratchy acrylic yarn anyway? I’ll tell you who… I do! I am a former public school teacher turned SAHM (stay at home mom), obsessed with crocheting, and now that my family of five lives on one income, I can’t afford to be a yarn snob. And to be honest, I’ve come to love the abundance of colors and the wash-ability in acrylic yarn. I very rarely use anything else anymore. I can toss my hand-made hats, mittens, sweaters, afghans, and amigurumi Elsa dolls right into the washer without worry, because honestly, I don’t have time to hand-wash my crocheted items. I need a durable, washable, dryer-safe, colorful, kid-friendly yarn. Red Heart Super Saver to the rescue!

Crochet Pattern: Autumn Harvest Scarf

By Amy Yarbrough – November 19th, 2015 12 Comments
I can’t tell you how fond I am of autumn colors. They are so earthy and appealing! When autumn rolls around each year I am sure to find some way of exploiting this love of color. And here’s this years version, a simple, one-skein scarf that takes very little time to crochet. The stitch pattern is easy to work and at the same time lovely, giving the lightweight scarf a little character. I chose Red Heart’s Boutique Unforgettable in Polo and a fairly large size hook and ended up with a scarf perfect for these cool fall days! Autumn Harvest Scarf

Crocheting Without Eyesight

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – November 17th, 2015 4 Comments

It is interesting to learn about the ways that different people crochet. Back in March, Rachel shared a video with adaptive crochet methods for the legally blind. This got me thinking about what the term “legally blind” means and the fact that any of us could possibly become legally blind. Will we still crochet? If it ever happens to me, I would like to! This led to a web search about blind crochet. What I found was fascinating.

Crochet Pattern: Braided Fingerless Gloves

By Rachel Choi – November 15th, 2015 Be the first to comment
These fingerless gloves have a cable look, without having to crochet a cable. The braid down the center of the glove is the focal point and creates interesting texture. Feel free to make the braid in multiple colors or in a solid color as shown in the sample photo. Fingerless gloves are great for keeping your hands and wrists warm, while still giving your the dexterity you need from your fingers. These wrist warmers are designed to fit most women, but if a wider or narrower circumference is needed, simply crochet more or less rows on the sides. crochet braided fingerless gloves wrist warmers
