Brrr. Do you feel the frost in the air? I don’t. (That’s because Florida is not a very frosty state.) However, I know that a great deal of Crochet Spotters live in climates where the temperatures are dropping and the seasons are changing. As a native New Englander, I know that this time of year is a good one for weekend hikes. It’s your last chance to get in some fresh mountain air before the snow settles in. However, the proper hiking gear is essential and crochet can be a part of it! Today I share 8 patterns that can keep you prepared on your winter hikes.

This table runner uses one of my favorite stitch patterns. It’s made with a chevron stitch that you can work all in one color, or in multiple colors if you desire. The rows alternate between solid and lace to give you a modern yet still lacy look. The pattern includes instructions for adjusting the size as you see fit. Make it as wide and as long as you like in order to fit your table. The table runner in the sample photo uses an ordinary medium/worsted weight yarn, but it would also look great using thinner yarns to give it a more delicate feel.

Free? Did someone say free? We have a crochet hook set from Haven for Hands to giveaway for free! A few weeks ago I did a review on the Haven for Hands Crochet Hook Set, so go check that out if you are interested in learning more about the crochet hooks, case, and notions that come with it. Sarah at Haven for Hands was kind enough to give us an extra set to giveaway to one lucky Crochet Spot reader.
How do you enter to win??
To enter, submit a photo of your crochet WIP (work in progress) or a finished crocheted item you just made into the Finish in ’15 Year Long Challenge. If you are already participating in the challenge, then you are already entered! The hook set will be given away for free as one of the many prizes during our fourth quarter.

A cable in the middle puts a twist (See what I did there?) on a classic accessory. While the bow is simple in concept, it’s a little tricky to complete, so it’s good to be comfortable with crochet cables and post stitches. Stitch markers may also come in handy for getting past the cable. |

In my first post on Crochet Spot, I asked why you decided to crochet. It was really interesting to hear stories from all over the globe about why people crochet. Since the Craft Yarn Council’s I Love Yarn Day was focused upon stitching it forward this year, and teaching someone to crochet, I began to wonder how Crochet Spot readers had learned to crochet.

The elf baby cocoon and hat would make a cute photo prop for your Christmas themed baby pictures. Use this in your baby’s newborn photo shoot or in other Christmas themed photos. You can also use this cocoon set as a baby costume. It would look great on both boys and girls. The cozy cocoon is crocheted from the bottom up with various color changes required as you go. The hat is crocheted from the top down and the pointy elf ears are sewn on afterwards. If using the cocoon and hat as an everyday accessory, feel free to leave off the bells on the hat.

I think I have already mentioned how fond I am of returning to the simple crochet basics of granny squares. This new baby blanket pattern is really just a twist on the old but I couldn’t help making it anyway. First you crochet four large granny squares and then put them together for one large, and fun, blanket. And always remember, there is nothing like a handmade baby blanket. Parents will treasure it for a while but a child will treasure it forever. |

I know I can’t be the only one out here with multiple partial skeins of yarn left over. By partial skeins, I mean skeins or balls of yarn from which you’ve only used a few yards, like maybe 50 yards or less. They are left over after a project. Partial skeins can be a bit of a conundrum, because it’s too much yarn to throw away, but it might leave you stumped about what to do with it! Since I need to solve this problem for myself, I decided to put together a round up of patterns that we all could use to make the most of the yarn we have.

This sweater is great for everyday wear. You can dress it up or dress it down. Wear it with your favorite belt or let it drape open for a relaxed look. It would look great with a pair of leggings or jeans. The sweater is crocheted from the top down with no sewing required. It can be made in 9 different sizes from X-Small to 5X. Try it on as you go to ensure the proper fit. The sweater is intended to have a tight fit, but if a looser fit is desired simply crochet the next size up. As an adjustable sweater, you can make the sleeves as long or short as you like to create short sleeves or long sleeves. The cardigan is intended to be tunic length, but can be adjusted to be any length that you desire.
