For lack of a better option, growing up I would put my pencils and other accessories in the front slip of my binder. Naturally the plastic slip would stretch and eventually become too lose to hold papers. Now that I am older I can very well see the flaws in that method of carrying supplies, but what else can you do with them? There are many kinds of lovely pencil bags and pouches to choose from at the store, even some with the option of latching into your binder. I liked this idea especially and designed my own. Here is the pattern for you to make also! The stitch is called Shallow Single Crochet and is easy to do while lending an academic look to the piece. |

Today’s Yarns for You selection is a very special, indie-dyed confection, Aesir by A Hundred Ravens. A Hundred Ravens is an independent yarn company that I learned about when I visited Stitches Midwest in August. I was drawn into their booth because of the gorgeous array of bold colors and interesting combinations. I purchased the skein I’m reviewing today. It was a splurge, but I’m happy I did it!

Here is a crochet project for those days when you just don’t feel like sewing a bunch of pieces together or sewing on buttons. This neck warmer is designed so that no buttons and no sewing is required! The neck warmer is able to slide over your head, and still fit snugly around your neck. It is a great addition to your fall or winter accessories that will keep you toasty warm. Although the neck warmer will fit most adults, the instructions are written so that you can adjust the size if you see fit. You can even make it into a child sized neck warmer. Feel free to make it taller, shorter, looser or tighter if you prefer.

Do you know that feeling when you finish reading a book in a series, and the only thing you want to do is crack open the next one? What about the feeling when there is no next one yet? Well, my wait for the next one has recently ended, and I’ve finally gotten around to actually going to the bookstore. What better way to celebrate a new book (other than reading it!) than with a new bookmark? |

Here is the third in my hot air balloon applique repertoire! (See my other two: Hot Air Balloon Applique and Striped Hot Air Balloon Applique). This pattern blends three fiery colors in a ripple between each section. The ripple is made with two rows of simple increasing and decreasing. Use this one and the others for decorating a blanket or nursery pillows, or whatever comes to mind. And as usual, have fun! |

Did you know that while crochet is found all over the world, the names and abbreviations we use for the crochet patterns are different, even in other English-speaking countries? It can be very confusing to come across a great crochet pattern, look it over, and realize that the stitches in the pattern do not appear to match the picture! Luckily, it’s pretty easy to read a foreign crochet pattern in English, and I’ve even created a downloadable chart for you to keep on hand in case you need it.
I should mention here that our Australian Crochet Spotters must be doing these “translations” all the time!

If you love texture and fun pillows, here is a pillow for you! Choose your favorite color or one that matches your home decor and crochet this pillow with its loopy stitches. You don’t need special tools to crochet this loop stitch, all you need is your regular crochet hook. A stitch photo tutorial is provided within the pattern. The pillow is crocheted in the round, from the top down, in one piece so that no sewing is required. If you would like to use it as a removable cover, feel free to add your own closure, such as a zipper or buttons, instead of crocheting the pillow closed.

Do you LOVE new crochet hooks? I know I do! I recently received a new set in the mail from Sarah at Haven for Hands. She asked me to do a review on their brand new hook set. I had a great time playing around with these hooks and will share with you my honest opinion, the good and the bad. Sarah was kind enough to give us an exclusive coupon code, in case you decide you have to have one of these sets! Code NVCEMUFE will give you a 25% off discount on Amazon.

It’s time to start thinking about costumes! And what a list there is to choose from. Have you ever thought of being a genie? With this cap that looks like something straight out of the TV show I Dream of Jeannie, you won’t have too far to go. Easy to crochet, this cap has surface crochet embellishments, but don’t be surprised if you come up with more ways to decorate it! Add a touch of tulle or chiffon, some beads or sequins, and don’t forget the high pony-tail! Have fun and let me know what you think! |
