Years ago I found a book on crochet snowflakes that inspired me to learn more and get back into crocheting. My reasons then were so that I could make snowflakes, and here I am today making a variety of crocheted projects. I want to offer you these three original snowflake patterns. Stiffen them and hang them from your tree or give them as gifts to friends and family. The thing about snowflakes is, you never can make just one! |

Sustainable living is all about what will sustain you; however, it is also about how you sustain yourself. With crochet, we are connecting with a hobby or a profession that is built on sustainable living. The key to sustainable living is recycling; what can be used over and over again or reworked to be used in another way.
In this article, I decided to share three Winter creations with you that can be used many times throughout the Autumn, Winter, and perhaps, even the Spring months as well. They’re just ideas, oldies, but goodies, if you will. During the Autumn and especially during those Winter months, we have to do our best to stay warm and cozy. Below, you’ll find three ideas (plus a quick and easy pattern) that I hope sparks your creativivity for the Winter season.

When I was interviewing for my teaching job in Mexico, the principal scheduled our meeting at about 10:30 A.M. As I walked across the campus to get to her office, I passed the kindergarten playground and the air was filled with the joyful squeals of laughter and happy chatter as the children ran and played. They were princesses, sailors, police officers, mamas and daddies. They were big blue whales, lions, puppies, & duckies.
I was sure the principal must have scheduled me right then on purpose. Who doesn’t delight in the sheer joy of children at play? It was a very happy time.

Crochet this super comfy poncho for extra warmth in the winter. With it’s oversized fit, it would look great with leggings. The pattern features subtle stripes by alternating 2 similar stitch patterns, one slightly more textured than the other. The poncho can be crocheted to fit any sized woman using the instructions within the pattern to adjust its width and length. The cowl neck can also be lengthened to create a thicker cowl or removed all together.

Now, I know this seems a little redundant, but it is not because there are so many ways to recycle yarn. There are many ways to get yarn in order to recycle it. I have seen so many people talking online about a variety of ways they recycle yarns. We’re not just talking about the yarn you already have at home like I talked about in previous posts, but other yarn resources.

Welcome back to How to Weave in Ends! In part one, we talked about the importance of weaving in yarn tails and a couple of ways to do it. Now I am going to show you what to do when working the tails into the row ends isn’t a good choice.
In the same way I showed you how to weave the tails into the single crochet border, simple weaving in behind a few strands of the stitches in the pattern piece is fairly quick and great for pieces with a wrong side. I recommend this method for solid stitch patterns like the one in the picture below.
Tip #2: After weaving a tail in, give the material a stretch so that the tail will look more natural and you can clip off any ends that show.

A Guest Post by Tara Cousins.
I’ve been crocheting a long time, but just recently started making crochet doll clothes for 18″ dolls. Since my little girl just turned 3, she’s finally interested in playing with my old American Girl doll and dressing her up, which prompted me to design my own patterns. The first item I started playing around with making is the doll’s shoes. In fact, they are pretty easy to make and to customize (with a strap, or make into boots). You can also use this basic idea to make baby shoes!
