By now, you may already know how to crochet twirls and ruffles lengthwise–in two ways, even. Another way to do these and ad a little variety to your crochet repertoire is to work them widthwise, it’s as easy as making row upon row of a mix of tall and short stitches.

This crochet pattern is great for creating warm winter slippers! With super bulky weight yarn, these quick slippers will have the feel of thick socks, but the look of cute booties. The pattern contains instructions for U.S. women size 4 – 12. It also includes instructions for adjusting the size in case you find the need to customize the slippers to a size that is not specified in the pattern. The slippers are crocheted from the toe up so you can try them on as you crochet. No sewing is required! Feel free to embellish your slippers with buttons or straps to give a true boot look.

While the hobby or profession of crochet could be considered sustainable living in and of itself, we can certainly employ creativity in extra uses for completed items just lying around the home. Come on, admit it, you may have a completed afghan, blanket, place mats, or something lying around or sitting in a closet collecting dust after the initial excitement of creating it wore off.
Well, never fear, there is a use for just about anything. In this first installment in my 3-part Sustainable Living Series, I will share a variety of uses I’ve found in my own personal life to be quite fun and surprisingly, helpful.

The fun of crocheting isn’t just in the finished project but the whole process: choosing the project, buying the material, beginning and completing it, and finally, showing it off. Unfortunately, there is one small but significant element that causes most of us some apprehension. And I’m sure you’ve already guessed what I’m going to say: weaving in ends.
No matter how we may want to get around it, hiding those unsightly yarn tails is a must. You can look for magical ways to avoid this step but as far as the world knows now, you cannot eliminate it. So let’s take a look at some of the most common methods.

Hey there, Crochet Spotters! Is it just me, or is life a whirlwind of activity for you, too? I LOVED reading your responses to my recent post How Much Do You Crochet? and those responses have informed this post!
Although the high holidays just ended and Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away, the perennial question, “What are you crocheting for the winter holidays?” has come up! As well it should! And I’m going to be very, very realistic this year. Not everything needs to be handmade, and it really is the thought that counts!
Having said that, let’s put some thought and some handmade into this gift-giving extravaganza. This year Haunukkah runs from December 16 through December 24, meaning (YAY!) we have more time this year! Christmas, is (of course) on December 25, as always.

Boleros and shrugs are excellent choices for tank tops or simple long sleeves, and even lovelier with summer dresses or formal gowns. Many people like to add them as the finishing touch to their already exquisite wedding dress. Make this Iced Bolero by crocheting a simple rectangle and partially stitching two sides together. Using a medium weight yarn, work a lovely, loose stitch and end with a slightly loopy border. An easy project for a few hours work of crochet! |

This tutorial actually springs form a happy accident. I wasn’t paying attention where I was placing my hook and almost made the mistake of working into the stitch I had just made, which led to some swatching and the birth of climbing stitches.
At first, I thought these would turn out like foundation stitches, but instead of simply adding width, they also add height. Freeform crocheters, especially, may have a lot of fun incorporating stitches like this into their work.

Crochet is hands down one of the best ways to relax on a sunny or a rainy day. With yarn and hook in hand, the only thing that matters is the pattern you wish to make a reality. This is crochet at its best.
If you think about some of your favorite crochet creations, you’ll probably find that many of them tinkle your fancy because of the pattern, but also because of the colors you chose to use. The color of the creation is just as important as the creation itself. But how can we take color choice to another level with our crochet creations?

Well, the seasons are changing and fall is definitely in full swing here in the United States. For those of us in South Florida that means sunny skies, mid-70’s, and snowbirds. My friends up north tell me this year the fall foliage is gorgeous! And those lucky people are probably wearing sweaters and cute legwarmers already!
I have to tell you, having made the move to a warm (Mexico) then even warmer (Florida) climate, these subtle seasonal changes are barely perceptible to my northern-bred body, but even so, the longer you stay somewhere, the more you become in tune with those tiny shifts. This year, I actually noticed a change in weather! In these climates, the holidays become even more important indicators of seasonal changes.

There’s a new crochet pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! This warm and snugly cowl features simple shaping that allows it to be worn around the neck or pulled up over the head as a hood without too much bulk under the chin – despite the very bulky yarn. Break out your chunkiest, squishiest yarn (and finally put that huge plastic hook to use) for a warm and cozy project.
