The Coolest Person Ever Crochets!

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 9 Comments

I interrupt my regularly scheduled ramble to bring you this breaking news story that I literally just heard on the local nightly news! I was tickled to learn that a local hospital has a very dedicated volunteer. Mazie Ford, the aforementioned “coolest person ever,” has been volunteering at her local hospital in Hollywood, FL for some seven years. She crochets (and knits) hats for newborn babies!

Although the newscasters referred to her work as "knitting," we can plainly see that most of it is crochet!

Here’s the thing: she started this volunteer effort at age 100! Rachel once asked us if we would still be crocheting at age 100. I guess Mazie’s answer was an emphatic yes! Did you do the math? “Amazing Mazie” is 107 years old! She was touched to hear of her nickname, and was almost moved to tears when she heard all the nice things that people were saying about her.

With hook in hand, Mazie explains how she feels about her amazing nickname.

This news story got me fired up! It just goes to show you that crochet is the secret to longevity ;), and a perfect way to give back to the community!

So, crocheters, your mission is clear: start planning now for your charitable endeavors during your eleventh decade of life! 😉 What will you crochet, and for whom?

Thank you for the inspiration!! A few years ago I started making lapghans for area nursing homes. I would find yarn at yard or rummage sales. Ends of yarns I use to make “Cat Nappers'” and donate them to the local animal shelters. I hope I will still be alive and crocheting at 100!!!!
